Voted for Nenshi, Stevenson, and Ferguson on my bike ride home from work, as I literally ride right past the advance polling station, I figured it was easier for me to do it today. It was quite empty.

^CCC, headed up by none other than Craig Chandler. Look for similar endorsements, announcements, appeals, etc. from the various other groups he runs, like PGIB and StreetChurch.

I am still undecided but I am leaning towards 2 candidates at this point. It is between Nenshi and Higgins. I cannot stand it when someone keeps saying that they have experience in politics and been an alderman for a long time. Sorry that is the reason why I eliminated MacIver, Hawksworth, Burrows, and Lord. I don't want to see another Bronconnier as mayor.

Voted for Nenshi today at the university around 1 and the line up at the advance polling station was pretty long, and did not seem like it was slowing down by the time I had left.
As well just showed my brother Nenshi's 3 main platform Youtube video so, add another vote for him.

I think some folks might be surprised by the broad base of support Naheed Nenshi is getting. Conventional polling methods and demographic tracking might not be capturing the whole story. Just something different happening now, and it's on the streets as well as cyberspace
Many people now in their 40s and 50s have spent the majority of their working career surrounded by digital technology and were early adapters and innovators on their own. Web-savvyiness is no longer the exclusive domain of the under 25 set. It's a rather outdated mindset.
Maybe it's just my social and professional circles, but I'm running into a pile of folks outright committed to voting Nenshi, and it runs across all sorts of economic and ideological lines. Civic politics is about potholes and dog parks -- nuts 'n' bolts stuff.
Just my observation. I think there's a seismic shift about to take place.

One other thing I like about Nenshi is that he isn't playing the typical, cynical load-up-the-buses from the mosques and temples mentality that once dominated North East Calgary ethnic politics. You take him on individual merit, or you don't. I think Calgary's grown to the point that this sort of stuff doesn't matter. The city is sophisticated, entrenched and dispersed enough now not to vote in homogeneous ethnic blocks.

Funny thing is that Nenshi is actually doing better in the NW and SW than in the NE. One theory is that the NE is cynical about getting one of their own elected and are polling strategically for Higgins. That could change in a hurry with the latest poll result: if it's a statistical tie, there is no strategic "anyone but" choice.

Another way to look at it: Whomever gets elected (and it's going to be a squeaker) will probably be intensely disliked by the majority of the populace within a few short months. City is $60 million in arrears and has to turn things around pronto lest the province steps in and cuts off funding.
So, the question becomes which candidate best weathers that particular storm.
I'm with Kent Hehr's assessment that Barb Higgins won't handle being yelled at very well.

No offense, but you're a guy who's lived the last decade or so in North Carolina. Read all you want, you're not getting the street vibe.
Nenshi has a lot of underdog populist appeal. Last time that happened an upstart lumpen TV reporter (at the time not even the station's star reporter) inexplicably stole the thunder of two well-oiled mayoral campaigns. Incumbent Ross Alger was the dry, boring Ric McIver and Peter Petrasuk the shifty-eyed Ric McIver.
Nenshi has followed city council meetings probably as religiously or even moreso than the average print beat reporter.
Nenshi's actually injected a whole lot of new enthusiasm into local politics, what with his contributions to Civic Camp and other endeavors.
He's the most intriguing politician to hit the local scene in decades.

Completely agree. People talk about Nenshi being the Gen Y candidate, and then they talk about his Twitter supporters.
Don't have a link, but twitter has been shown to be more 30+ than it is 20-30. My generation absolutely hates twitter. 30-40 is actually its main demographic

My sister and I will be there tonight with our Nenshi shirts on (section 108), first time I haven't worn my Flames jersey to a game since about 2000. I think it will feel a little weird.
Have a stack of the Nenshi business cards and pamphlets to hand out while we are there to any interested people.
