Halladay doesn't want to be traded, but he wants the Jays to do better. I don't really see a problem with that personally.

Good for Roy. I would be upset at always finishing in 3rd place and this year they will be lucky to finish that high. Every year they go to into spring training saying this is the year, this is the year and what happens? They make very few gains, they continue to be overrated. I believe someone said it in this thread just a week or 2 ago, the Jays are really wasting Doc's prime years.

Yeah, that was me, and they are. He's been one of the most consistent pitchers in the American League for about a 5 year stretch here. Outside of that freak injury to his shin back in 2005 and an appendix last year he's been a real horse for the team. Lately he's been that true stopper too with the injuries to the rotation. It's tragic that a guy that good isn't even getting a sniff of the playoffs.

This had better be a wake up call to the owners and whoever is the GM next season. The number one batter on the free agent market should be top priority. If Burnett leaves, or even if he doesn't, throw boatloads of cash at CC Sabathia and then trade for more batting help with the extra pitcher. Spend, but get THE best players out there, at any cost.

Well, with several players that don't play for us coming off our books at the end of the year, the jays will have 20 million or so to spend on top of whatever free agents they let go (Burnett's 12 million)

Plus they could also add 15-20 million dollars to their payroll and go for broke.

A TSN blogger wonders if the Jays should move Doc now rather than later.

The thought crossed my mind today too.

The thought of the kind of return he would get is mouth watering. If the Jays don't think they have a legit shot at it in the next 2 years Doc is under contract, this is something JP has to seriously think about.

But then again, how could they contend without Halladay?

With some of the stupid contracts JP has handed out (hello Vernon Wells - Wells could go on waivers right now and not be picked up), you might as well move Halladay now. This team has almost no payroll flexibility and Rogers wont be opening up the wallet anytime soon.

It really is painful to see a guy like Halladay stuck on this team. The Jays aren't contending with or without Halladay.

Well its almost half empty every night anyways. The Jays currently average just over 27,500 fans per game. Just 54% of the dome's capacity.

They are around 20th out of 30 teams for total. Would the Flames be that packed after what.....15 years of non playoffs?

No doubt. I was more speaking from the perspective of Halladay, not the Jays. Might as well give Roy a chance to do something with his career instead of being stuck on this lousy team.

Either that or fix the god damn problem.

I hear ya. And I think most of us agree Ricciardi is the problem.

The problem is that in Baseball and in the AL East in particular, it's very difficult to make the playoffs. You know as well as anyone on this forum...that the Jays probably don't have the pieces they need to in order to make a legitimate playoff run this year, or even next year. Teams like Oakland, Minnesota, and Cleveland are willing to trade their top guys for a heap of prospects and attempt to piece together a playoff calibre team at a later date. Those teams don't fact quite the same hurdles as the Jays do in the AL East as they don't neccessarily have to compete with two big spenders in their Division to make the playoffs. But these are teams who do find a way to make the playoffs or be in contention.

It's just a shame that a guy as good as Halladay isn't even getting a sniff of the playoffs. Other guys similar to him usually get at least one or two cracks at it with their team before they move on to a high payroll team, but Toronto hasn't even been close for years. I think it would leave a huge hole in the rotation more than anything. But the team has shown that even with top notch pitching they still haven't been good enough to really compete for a playoff spot as they've been at least 5 games out pretty much all year.

Well I doubt Burnett ends up in Philly now. The Phillies have just acquired Joe Blanton.

Great to see Garza out pitch the Doc last night. The Jays needed to win sweep this series to have a chance imo, they were playing much better and the Rays were struggling coming in. But instead the Rays get the big hit Friday night and then have one really big inning against Doc last night and that was the game. The Jays never seem to get a big hit and its usually one or 2 hits a game that is the difference, last night it was Longoria's grand slam that was really the ball game.
