I can't believe this was even a story. So lame and embarrassing for the organization. I miss the days when the Flames had quality beat reporters. This is an organization that was once covered by an all time great in Eric Duhatschek. This probably reflect on RSN more than anything but it's disappointing how Flames media coverage has eroded so much over the years and I just don't understand how Eric Francis is somehow the last man standing. Just a horrible and forgettable era for this organization all around.

Not sure if this was posted already. Pronman's assessment of Parekh in the WJC.
Quote:
Zayne Parekh, RHD, Canada (Calgary)
Parekh was everything for Canada’s blue line, at times being the only one who could reliably make a play, and the plays he made were often high-end. His vision and shot are both excellent, making him a constant threat on the power play and on breakouts. His defense will never inspire; that’s just what his game is. But the hope is that he provides so much offense that, on balance, he’s a positive player.

Flames media sure likes to pick on their young stars.
> Tkachuk puck flip incident
> Gaudreau's diet
> Monahan being too boring
> now Zayne with these nothing comments being blown out of proportion
There's probably more examples going back. It's tiring as a fan and you can see why star players end up avoiding Canadian markets with all these hack journalists making their life difficult.

I think with the Zayne comments, its more of the loud "We hate Huska" crowd on social media that blew up this nothing burger comment and made it into a easy story for the media.

Pronman basically saying he was Canada’s best player while somehow still injecting his negative bias saying “hopefully he can be a positive player”. Like wasn’t he just that for Team Canada?

The puck flip tantrum was a bit ridiculous TBF. And "Boring Sean Monahan" was a teammate thing and all in fun.

And I think the subtle “he shouldn’t have said that” context behind guys like Weegar and Kadri brushing it off (and saying they’ll enjoy bugging him about it) is more related to teaching Zayne how to avoid giving the absolutely awful media a story to run around with.

Yes, he’s far from a good defender right now but my analysis of it is that because he’s as smart as he is, he figured out early that the way he defends currently was more than sufficient for what he needed to be an ‘average’ defender in major junior. He’s learning now that that’s not going to cut it for the NHL and from everything I’ve seen/heard from him, I have no doubts it’s something he will get better at over the next handful of years. Will he be a defensive stalwart? No, but I’m confident he will grow to being around average defensively.
I also think the internet community is being way too nitpicky about it overall. People (not here) saying he’s Bouchard 2.0. I know Zayne has had some lackadaisical defensive efforts but please someone show me a highlight of Zayne where he completely botches a defensive play like we’ve seen Bouchard do a half a dozen times already THIS YEAR.

Good take. But, to the bolded: don’t worry, people here have already said much worse

I thought the best defence was a good offence.

Not puck flip related, but remember when Treliving dragged Tkachuk out for an impromptu presser where he stood there like a disappointed father talking about what Matthew shouldn't have done? I believe it was suspension related to an incident with Doughty?
Still, when is the last time you remember something like that happening with any team?

Yup, I bet the actual talk with the vets is how to be more careful around the media in the future, and how innocent comments can get blown way out of proportion if not careful.

Is this a Flames thing or an NHL thing?
While all NHLers seem to talk like robots, I cannot imagine this being as big a deal in other markets. Why are people in our media trying to run him out of town? Like wtf this was a nothing burger.

That would be pretty difficult. Zayne was only on the ice for 4 goals against in the NHL, 1 with the empty net. So far most of his defensive breakdowns happen at the opositon's blue line. Either his pass gets intercepted, leading to a breakaway, or he fails to keep the puck in on a pinch leading to an odd-man rush against. That comes with the territory for offensive defensemen, especially ones that are only 12 games into their career. I mean, he wouldn't be the same player if he only chose the safe play in those situations.
Parekh has been a net positive all year. He has improved the Flames transition game, and held his own in the defensive end. The offense is coming.
