Bean seems like a problem.
Dude came off as an absolute goober in the press conference last year.

So they probably wanted a 1st round pick on top of whatever they already believed Markstrom was worth on his own.

I am not sure if $6 million in one season should have the same asset value as $6 million spread over 2 seasons though. I can see why NJ might scoff at that.
It would be more like what $3 million in retention is worth, and then getting two of those assets.

In the end it's still Edwards, I have no idea how the conversation went but I suspect Bean didn't help much either, after all he's a bean counter.

The Devils situation is actually really funny to me now, I’m really hoping a better trade partner comes forward for Markstrom and NJ is left holding the bag.

If the Flames trade Markstrom and start losing a lot of games down the stretch, then it looks like the Flames are rebuilding but Bean said we can’t say the word rebuild so that would put him in a spot where every person he comes across would be questioning him as to how it’s not a rebuild when we’ve traded our Vezina calibre starting goalie for draft picks and are clearly in rebuild territory.

I have no idea what his purpose even is? Like does he have blackmail on Edwards? Golfing buddy? He seems to know the square root of F all about hockey whenever he speaks.

He runs the business
The mistake was having him talk about hockey at all
But he’s basically in charge of the business side of CSEC

Multiple insiders said the Flames approached Markstrom about Jersey and that he said he would be willing to go there or at a minimum consider it. So it seems like that conversation happened in some form or another. I just don't see him going out of his way to call out management if he was only upset about a leak which is pretty minor. He's been around the league long enough to know that rumors get out there and are part of the business. It's also entirely possible any leak had nothing to do with the Flames side.

When I was at the draft this summer, I could see that both Bean and Maloney were at the table, and Bean was just as involved in discussion as anyone.
I don't know what the draft has to do with the money/business side of things. Perhaps he was there to approve trades on behalf of Edwards.

His arrogance and condescending tone was really off putting in that presser. He shouldn't be doing any PR work for the team. Miss the days when we had a true gentlemen in Ken King.

Which is crazy considering he's worked for the Flames for decades now and his son is former 1st round pick and now Columbus Blue Jacket Jake Bean. The guy seems to have picked up no hockey knowledge despite being surrounded by it in his professional and personal life.

Bean is a bean counter, an accountant, with no apparent hockey background.
He needs to do his job and nothing more.

I tell ya, IF Conroy had a deal he liked for Markstrom and it was blocked by the higher ups because they thought they still had a shot at the playoffs, that's some pretty sick #####.
And it won't look any better with Markstrom getting shelled for a few games, then getting injured, then Wolf coming up and carrying the team to a bunch of wins.

I hope the coach doesn't even play Markstrom down the stretch and makes upper management look even more incompetent.

Several insiders reported that Conroy had a deal he liked but it was nixed by someone higher up over retention. We don’t know to what extent that means the money itself or the compensation for retention. I suspect it was both at work - Edwards/Bean don’t like paying millions to people who aren’t working for them, and so Maloney pushed Conroy to ask for more in compensation.
There were also multiple reports that a week to 10 days later the Devils came back with a revised offer that didn’t include salary retention. The reason the Flames turned this down is murkier. It could have been that the revised deal didn’t offer enough hockey value. But we do have reports from Freidman that this second deal was nixed by ownership out of hopes of making the playoffs.
The fact the Flames dealt Hanifin after that date does not invalidate this conjecture. Hanifin was a pending UFA. And the Flames made multiple pitches to re-sign him. They only dealt Hanifin once they had no choice. That’s not the case at all with Markstrom. He’s not a ‘deal him or lose him for nothing’ asset like Hanifin was.
This is all speculative enough that people can believe what they want. Personally, given the track record of this franchise, I have an easier time believing ownership pulled the plug on a deal that Conroy liked than I have believing that several NHL insiders were all manipulated into carrying water for the Devils.
