Maier doesn't look great, but this is his 1st year as a starter. I think he can still grow into being a decent starter during this season.
Is that an overly optimistic take, or is it glass half full kind of take?

I think it is both.
On the positive side the league overall is so weak that you are right we still have a shot at the play-offs because the Esks are an embarrassment and the Riders are garbage as well. Plus the East and is awful outside of Toronto.
We also have DD and Huf and if there was anyone in the league I trust to bring in improvements it is these two, nobody else even close.
However, the negatives are much bigger in my view. Maier sucks. This isn’t a rookie struggling to adapt, he doesn’t have the physical skills needed. Our ceiling with him is fluking our way to the last play-off spot and getting killed in the play-offs.
You point out the losses to good teams, our win was against an awful team and it was far from a blowout. Also the Riders already got 2 undeserved wins this year including against us which will make it tougher to catch them.
DD and Huf are great but at times, DD especially, seem to have one weakness and that is stubbornness. My concern is they have got it right so much they will be stubborn to stick with Maier. Us having no other viable option, sorry Stevens is a short yardage guy only cannot pass at all, at QB makes me think we are living and dying with Maier.
