Ekblad is way better than Weegar, that's not even up for debate.
Suggesting Florida blew up a President's Cup winning team during the off season is pure nonsense.

Tkachuk is a younger upgrade on Huberdeau. Florida will do that deal again
Ekblad was their best D, not Weegar.

Difference is Flames are supposedly in win now mode so it doesn't matter what Huby's going to be in three or for years. If we don't make some waves in the next three years it's rebuild time (though we all know that won't happen).

Florida's issue is mainly Bobrovsky. They have always played a high risk style, but Bobrovsky could bail them out. He hasn't been doing that and the results show that.
And Yeah, Weegar was not their best defenseman as others mentioned. He is good at a lot of things breaking up plays and in the offensive zone, but makes a lot of high risk plays in his own zone, and it seems like he is 50/50 on those. I think the good outweighs the bad, but you do get both with Weegar.

I thought we were talking about Gaudreau's choice here
He could have played on a very good team in his prime and chose to go to a bad team for his prime. You are talking like the Flames chose this option, they didn't.

So they lost their second best dman and their top scorer with yet another first.
Added a scorer that might equal what Huberdeau did in Florida but likely not quite hit the same totals and minus the dman.
It's working out so well with them 8 points out of a playoff spot at xmas

Ekbkad and his -14 says he is missing Weegar and he maybe been the quiet MVP keeping that group together last season.

The Flames aren't where we want to be but why did you use the entire league standings? To make them look worse? That's way less relevant than where they are in the West and division.

And kind of irrelevant to the conversation of Gaudreau choosing to go to Columbus. Obviously the Flames with Gaudreau are a far better team for his prime than CBJ, not to mention some other places he probably could have gone.
He went there to win games now...his words. Not to suck so they can get more high end draft picks and be good in a few years.

Because they need to beat the best of the league to win. Showing a better looking ranking in a weak division instead of a ranking against the whole league would be more deceptive for a 'win now' team.
I could have shown their ranking by winning percentage instead, which would put them at 20th in the league and just barely above Vancouver. That would make them look worse, but it would still be fair. It's not like I'm fudging the numbers. Their numbers are what they are. Hopefully they get better.

Whose upset? It's just the standings.
That record from last year is a substantially better win and points percentage than this year though anyways.

this season would be at least as good with .920 goaltending like last year...they have scored more goals this year believe it or not
like what even is the argument here anyway? Gaudreau left and went to one of the worst teams in the entire league. When it comes to winning it was a terrible decision for him. The fact they are so bad they MIGHT be good when he is 35 is some kinda reach.
He will likely go from being a 115 point +64 player on a divisions winner to an 80 some point -30 player on a bottom 3 squad...there really is no debate on the hockey side when it comes to his decision.

What are you going on about? I'm not talking about Gaudreau. I simply responded to the comment about the Flames being in 'win now'.
You have some weird gear to grind on this topic, and I dgaf.

I think what he is saying is if Johnny stayed here he would have had a better chance to win hockey games now. Instead hr went to the Blue Jackets to win now when they are in contention to win the Bedard sweepstakes.
His "win now" window isn't accurate in Columbus. His contract might look wasteful when they are ready to win when he is 35

well yeah if you are responding to that comment out of the context of the conversation it was posted in...
That was a direct reply in a discussion about Gaudreau going to Columbus vs. Huberdeau on the Flames
Its hard to imagine things going much worse for Gaudreau right now hockey wise

That record last year is a 105pt pace which is far better than the 91pt pace they are playing to this year at the same time. It seems people go back and see the point totals were similar but forgot the Flames were shutdown by Covid in December and have played 7 more games this year vs last. The comments about the Flames not being in a playoff spot are not true based on points % as many teams had 5+ more games played than the Flames.

Winning percentage and points percentage are not the same thing. The Flames are higher in points percentage because of leading the league in points for OT losses.
Their win % is .457, which is just ahead of Vancouver's .455 and just behind St.Louis' .471.
