Yikes.
I realize with a pitch clock the batters have to do their part as well...but unlike the pitchers with a set clock that makes it clear to everyone when he has to throw, the batters being considered "set" is going to be open to interpretation potentially from the umpires, which of course brings its own issues and concerns (and I assume not reviewable).

Imagine this was a playoff game?

I'm fully on board with this being established in the pre-season. Nothing is on the line, may as well establish the new norms in the most extreme way to set the tone. Similar to when the NHL started calling the clutching and grabbing penalties years ago. It was an adjustment but it's necessary.

Probably what a Vlad extension will look like. Hopefully less term, but I can't see Vlad not going for his max.

That's the thing. The awareness is a good thing, for sure and being super strict in preseason to drive home the rule change is a good idea. But preseason or not, what if some ump *thinks* he sees out of the side of his eye, some flinch or some foot movement by a batter, constituting, in his opinion, not being set in the batter's box?

Maybe I'm making too much of it, and maybe the rule is or should be more cut and dry(the batter just needs to be in the batter's box when there is 8 seconds left, if he is set or not) but leaving anything like this to the interpretation of umpires is opening a can of worms.

Agreed fully. Umps have shown they're ego driven so if it is not clear, should be defined better.

Anyone at spring training this year? Not huge into it but with a smaller stadium may consider going next year. Any idea how much tickets are, and when you need to buy them?

Thankfully Bard isn’t a roster player. He’s going to need a hell of a lot better than that to make the big league team. Junior Fernandez didn’t look that hot either…his ERA last year is really deceiving because he had a whip of 1.61 and an FIP of over 5.00.

The guy pitches 1 inning in his first spring training game of the year and people want him DFA’d?

Im not for or against Bard but perhaps a longer look is necessary?

You don’t need to DFA a non roster player. As a veteran, I’m sure Bard will have several other chances this preseason to show that he deserves to break into the Blue Jays bullpen but it’s a crowded place (even without a lot of elite talent) and he’s going to need to make a better impression.

Get his ass in a rocket bound for the center of the sun!

I turned my T.V. on and he get lit up. Given how the bullpen ended last year...this did not make a good first impression. It's February so I really don't put any stock in what's happening in games right now.

Got a score alert for the Jays hiring of former Astros GM James Click. In this case VP of baseball strategy. Never heard of that position but sounds like a huge hire. Eventual Atkins replacement? Seems like it puts more pressure on Atkins, if anything.

The team announced on Monday that it has hired James Click as vice-president, baseball strategy.

Click joins the Jays after three seasons as general manager of the Houston Astros, where he led the team to last season’s World Series title. Prior to his time in Houston, Click spent 15 years in the Tampa Bay Rays organization, including an appointment to vice-president of baseball operations in 2017.

A lefty who throws heat for strikes? Yeah that will work.

Like I've said, I won't be one bit surprised to see Tiedemann pull a 2021 Manoah and get called up after a few months of dominating AAA.

Apparently Bassit's velo was down, hopefully just a pre season thing? sitting 89mph I heard. Not good if it's not just a blip.

On the flip side, Robberse was apparently sitting 93-34mph, which if true makes him a legit prospect with a chance at being a starter long term because the guy can pitch, his achilles heel was his velocity.

Watching him again right now on Jays in 30, as they mentioned on the broadcast it's not like he's throwing 98,99 and flailing around out there, he's very smooth and in control.

Having a lefty that can throw like that is pretty awesome. He's got a very bright future.
