Complete opposite signing from guys like Brouwer and Neal.

Offensively though he has been more consistent this year. I believe there was a story that he has been dealing with some injuries the last couple years that have now been addressed?

He probably has my vote as Flames MVP so far this year.

Always nice when you can get a middle 6 veteran who plays his ass off every night. The last guy I really liked here (aside from his last season when he was very meh) was Frolik. Backlund paired with a veteran winger and a rookie skater (not right now with Huberdeau) for whatever reason has always been a good combination to assemble. And I really like Coleman and Backlund together. You can always rely on them to play a good two-way game.
So far this is Coleman's best season too and arguably the best forward right now with his consistent effort.

Backlund has been noticeably off his game for a little while now (I didn’t get to see last night’s game so maybe he was better). The previous few games he seemed surprisingly like the weak link on that line, because Huberdeau was playing well and Coleman was Coleman. But Backlund always rebounds from poor play.

Yeah, Backlund has been the weak link on that line, for the last while. But he has always been a second half guy. He has also had the new burden of wearing the C, and the team has struggled, making it heavier. I think he'll be fine, going forward.
Huberdeau continues to improve, and Coleman is playing really well, so I expect Backlund, and the line, to steadily improve.

I'm not sure if he had off season surgery or just had more time to rehab and rest some nagging injuries that he didn't have time to deal with but he had time to deal with what ever he was dealing with because the Flames missed the playoffs last year. This year is his best of 3 season in Calgary so far.

The thing about Coleman is that he generates his own offense with minimal ice time and often poor linemates. That is such a huge boost. Most NHL quality players can put up 40ish points playing with franchise players on the top line. Not many can do that from the 3rd line. Ideally, if the Flames were competing, Coleman would be part of the depth that pushes them over the edge.
With the cap going up, I'm surprised there isn't more interest in Coleman yet. Although, I guess right now, every competing team is terrified about taking on cap and they are having to deal with re-signing the players they have.

This is true. Here are the Flames players by points per 60 minuets played (at least 10 games played):
1. Connor Zary - 2.982
2. Blake Coleman - 2.183
3. A.J. Greer - 2.172
4. Nazem Kadri - 2.128
5. Andrew Mangiapane - 2.119
6. Adam Ruzicka - 2.027
7. Jonathan Huberdeau - 1.969
8. Walker Duehr - 1.955
9. Elias Lindholm - 1.883
10. Yegor Sharangovich - 1.817
11. Rasmus Andersson - 1.599
12. Mackenzie Weegar - 1.576
13. Mikael Backlund - 1.572
14. Martin Pospisil - 1.538
15. Dillon Dube - 1.319
16. Noah Hanifin - 1.203
17. Matthew Coronato - 0.864
18. Christopher Tanev - 0.837
19. Dennis Gilbert - 0.593
And Zary has been on another level compared to everyone else on the team.

The Flames play minuets?
No wonder they're having trouble in first periods. They need to put Mozart on the PA during warmup!

Not sure he can be said to have played with generally poor linemates in Calgary. It’d been overwhelmingly Backlund with either Mangiapane or Huberdeau. For a middle six guy that’s as good as you can probably get.

I’ve always liked Coleman as a player and a “team” guy. Probably coach material when his playing days are over. And I thought that his advice to Gaudreau at the end of his last season with the Flames to stay in Calgary - something like “You could build a legacy here” - was an example of this.

With so many disappointments on the team, Coleman is looking good
But it’s about what should be expected for 5M
And yeah his linemates are not poor.

Can you update this for 5v5 minutes? I think people who play PK might be getting penalized (though it's ironic to ask this after they just got 2 SHG!)

Coleman never takes a night off. He has one gear, and it's balls to the walls. I can't recall a single game where he wasn't visible and involved.

Yeah he's for sure no bargain but at the same time few players earn their money in the workmanlike manner he does. He and his wife also seem like really good people as they have both embraced living in Calgary and have made a lot of friends in a short amount of time. I was never a fan of the contract but he's that rare player that is more than the sum of his parts and the type of player you want as part of your organization. He's worth every penny of the contract which is something you can't say about a lot of players.

Great contract so far. Halfway?
Maybe even a bargain with the cap going up?

Great player, needs to be in the playoffs again.
If the right move to a contender is there this year, might be wise to explore options.

From an interesting article on TSN:
Quote:
“On the bench, it was getting to the point where guys were frustrated and bitching,” Coleman said, adding that he’s far from the only Flames player who has been vocal. “I think the players have done a better job of policing the room…it’s, ‘What can I do better?’ instead of, ‘What can the guy next to me do better for me?’”
|
Quote:
“It was very clear that wasn’t the recipe for success,” Coleman said. “Forwards yelling at D, D yelling at forwards, things like that…I think we’ve eradicated a lot of that from the room…credit to all the guys. Everyone has calmed it down.”

That doesn't sound like a fun working environment.
