Honest question: does the CPL have enough money to stage a single site season with no income from the gate?

Not likely, they're almost entirely gate driven. Covid is a potentially sinking event for a fledgling league like this, though they would never come out and say it.

For leagues like this the first three years are critical and they need to be firing on all cylinders (primarily gate revenue) just to survive and gain stability. The average CPL fan may not understand how dire a blow like this is, but I truly hope they can come out of it.

A played season this year would only be to A) keep players that would otherwise move on and play elsewhere and B) keep fans locked into the idea that this is a new, strong soccer league in Canada.

The best financial move if it wasn't for holding fan and player interest in a new league in a country with a sea of failure start ups would easily be to stay away from playing this season and start up next spring.

That's why I'm wondering if there's more to this silence than incompetence. I've been questioning for a couple weeks if there's more to the story than being so tone deaf as to stay silent while every other league starts up or at the very least stays in communication with fans.

I strongly feel they've been on the edge of cancellation for a month or so, but fear the fallout of publicly stating it. I really, really don't see how they operate like this, and feel they think they're best bet is string along and then announce a cancellation and an announcement of next season at the same time to lessen the blow and hopefully retain fans.

I hope I'm wrong, but if I'm right hopefully they come out at some point and confidently state that they couldn't operate in these fan-less conditions but will be 100% ready when Covid restrictions lift.

Our owners are fine, but most owners in this league can't be paying out a million or two to salaries and operating costs with zero fan or TV revenue coming in. Not a chance, they were already tight with 2-6k fans a game.

Rob Gale of Valour was quoted the other day as saying a neutral site competition doesn't make sense for the league. He was pretty up front about it.

Choice A) lose tons of money some owners might not be able to afford by having a single site tournament without fans

B) cancel the season and throw the entire future of the league into question

Those are two really bad choices.

Also, Sergio Camargo is clearly trolling.

Except of course for this...

I suspect they have to play, the contract with mediapro likely relies on it.

Also, I believe that every ownership group had to warrant that they could absorb 3-5 years of substantial losses.

Wednesday is the most recent day I've heard regarding an announcement on the 2020 season. But that has changed multiple times over the last few days.

This Tweet makes it look like Wednesday is the day. Of course, I've been fooled about 20 times over the last 8 weeks so who knows. Will spend tonight preparing my pitchfork...

I've already assumed my season ticket money is gone and won't be refunded, nor will there be any sort of season. The league's lack of communication, and the club's, have been inexcusable. I don't even care enough to be angry about it, their disinterest in engaging their supporters and customers is fully reciprocated.

Wednesday it is. Once the announcement is made, I'll share what I know about the league's plan for how to deal with 2020 season tickets.

Word is season starts Aug 15 in Charlottetown. Teams arrive Aug 7th. I'll be interested in seeing how long the season lasts.

That rumour on an August 15 start date is incorrect. The tournament actually starts August 13.

In all honesty this is the only North American sporting news I’ve really been waiting for this summer. It’s been a long wait, but we’re maybe, hopefully, finally nearing the end and will get to support the Cavs again

Hopefully we get some word this week on whether Escalante and Luca are joining the club, or if Tommy has to make some quick deals to bolster the lineup. I suspect Haber will be an option.
