Puck Daddy on the Giordano negotiations. No news, but talks about what can and can't happen in terms of term and cap implications.

I quit reading that when I read this sentence:
"A sampling of players on expiring contracts this coming season: David Jones, Jiri Hudler, Joe Colborne, Josh Jooris, Sean Monahan, Johnny Gaudreau, Paul Byron, Markus Granlund, Kris Russell, Jonas Hiller, Karri Ramo, and obviously Giordano. Several of those guys you bid adieu without a second thought. Let Jones, Colborne, Byron, Russell, and Ramo go without a second thought."

Colborne, Russell and Romo go without a second thought????? I'm pretty sure I would think about that for more than a second if I was the GM.

I wish you would have mentioned that it was Lambert - I wouldn't have clicked on it.

What a brutal waste of time that article was.

I don't say this about many media types because I get that they are paid to have and voice their opinions on things regardless of the popularity of which they speak. That being said however, Ryan Lambert is a complete and total hack...and that's being polite.

He proves it again multiple times in this piece in which he is correct about the premise, but a complete swing and miss in the execution of getting to the point.

By the end of this thing he has the Flames getting rid of up to 8 different players from the current roster because of salary cap implications...that simply do not exist and very likely wont even a year from now for the very reasons he touches on himself!

It's almost painful to read through such nonsense knowing that average joe and jill will take it as gospel that Calgary is in trouble before they even hit the ice for training camp.

Ugh.

Why would you let Colborne go without a second thought? Strange article.

Quite the useless analysis on an important question.

Would love to see a well thought out assessment of the likely contracts our UFA's and RFA's would command, and then which moves would make the most sense for our club to make it under the cap.

Flames have a complex cap situation and the next set of moves will be more difficult, with more necessary tradeoffs than any of the recent moves.

Ignoring the actual thought for a moment. That's just a super poorly written.

Lambert is one of the worst and most nonsensical guys to write anything hockey related, he's a actual waste of time and anyone who gives him a view should hang their heads in shame before throwing themselves off of a cliff.

He's a brutal moron.

There are several threads already discussing this.

The problem with assessing the cap, even one year forward, is that there are so many variables, and so many assumptions that have to be made.

Do we pencil Monahan in for $4M on a bridge contract? $6M longer term? $7M?

That's only one player, and whatever assumption you make has a pretty profound impact on the next 22 assumptions that you have to make.

For me, there is always turnover on the roster. As long as you avoid the really terrible contracts, there should be plenty of room. And really, what are the Flames' worst contracts? Raymond and Engelland? Both about $3M and only 2 years left. Big deal.

Hudler, Jones, Russell, Hiller and Ramo are all UFAs at the end of this season. That's $18.9M. That offers a fair amount of flexibility.

The following year, Raymond, Bollig, Wideman, Smid and Engelland are all UFAs. That's another $16.1M. That provides a lot more flexibility.

As long as a team has ELC players that can contribute, there shouldn't be a problem. And the Flames have an abundance of prospects that could be ready to step up over the next three years.

Personally, I have absolutely no concerns whatsoever about the cap at this point.

Anyone think Russell would accept #4 D man money to stay in Calgary? I kind of think he would want to try and get 2/3 D man money from someone as a UFA. I don't know if the flames could afford to pay him that.

Yeah, that looked moronic to me as well. But it all makes sense in the light of Lambert's general low opinion of Kris Russell:

This should be all the evidence anyone ever needed to show that Lambert honestly, truly possesses no hockey acumen whatsoever.
