I'm pretty pumped for this one too. Not to the point where I've been eagerly awaiting it or anything, but I'll def check it out opening week. I love a good alien invasion movie with awesome CGI. This looks like a movie with great effects and poor acting, which is fine with me given the genre. Should be fun.

"Battle: Los Angeles" is noisy, violent, ugly and stupid. Its manufacture is a reflection of appalling cynicism on the part of its makers, who don't even try to make it more than senseless chaos. Here's a science-fiction film that's an insult to the words "science" and "fiction," and the hyphen in between them. You want to cut it up to clean under your fingernails.

So starts Ebert's half star review.

And that is how the review ends.

Eff Ebert.
Who needs a stinking storyline anyway? It's simple, aliens are invading and killing us all. If that actually happened, who the hell would time for a freaking love story? And as far as senseless chaos, violence and destruction go...well...again I say; what the eff else do you think would be happening? I say the best movies are the ones that get right to the point, like totally raunchy porn.
Aliens - check
Marines - check (including 'last day as the leader guy', 'noob who can't handle it guy', 'hot bitch who can shoot girl', and 'the egon spengler/donatello guy')
Lots of weapons - check
Stuff blowing up everywhere - check
Alien Spacecraft - check
Air, sea, and ground battles - check
Bring on the crapfest. It's a win win. Either its actually alright, or more likely has a chance of being so heinously bad it becomes classic and that is awesome too. Most likely it won't do either, but the world needed another movie about it's demise at the hands of aliens. Judging by Ebert's comments it's obvious they got to his home-world first and is understandably bitter over the whole thing. I just want to see lot's of stuff get exploded.

I think it is very difficult to make an Alien invasion movie that pleases the masses.
Just from this thread alone there are various prefrences on what would be a great invasion movie.
it appears it needs to have this:
a good story line
realism?
the invaders win\the invaders lose
a new idea
lots of explosions
cool new weapons
a scaled down battle and focusing on a few
a whole planet fighting
somebody is bound to hate it

I will never understand when aliens invade the US first.
That is kinda like when you are fighting off a mugger you punch him in the knife first

I'm usually not a fan of sprawling epic story lines because it is very tough for the plot to remain focused. I prefer smaller casts dedicated to solving more manageable problems. District 9 was one of the best alien movies I've ever seen because of this. By comparison, the TV shows V or The Event have huge world-scale story lines that make it impossible to keep focused.
I think Battle LA will be a rental for me.

Well written reviews of bad movies can be very funny. Ebert has a whole book of them.

I dunno these same movie buffs probably hated The Expendables and I loved it, it was time for a good ol shootem up cheesy crappy story line movie.
If this gives me aliens and a bunch of stuff blowing up I will consider it well worth my time.

My expectations have been sufficiently lowered enough where I'll probably enjoy this movie.

It's true, but this can be applied to any genre flick. Basically, stick to making a good movie, and it's bound to please someone. Or just make a crap movie with aliens or whatever scattered throughout it.
Really, I watch movies for a different experience than I get when playing video games. In games, blowing up aliens with big guns is fun and it's interactive. If that's all I wanted, than I'd do that. Battle: LA is being described as a video game you have to sit there and watch. That doesn't sound that fun.

I thought District 9 wasn't very good. So I'll probably love this movie.

Some people like movies that are good....
Just because it has an action focus does not mean it has to be a ####ty movie.
Pretty much what i thought it would look like, just like everything else hollywood does recently, put out a good looking trailer for a ####ty movie and people will watch it without reading reviews.
At 129102310239 dollars a ticket i wouldnt waste my money on this crap fest.

Anyone ever go on spill.com for their reviews? I love listening to their audio reviews and generally agree on their decisions. Some I don't but for the most part I agree, anyway, Carlyle loved it and said it was fantastic.
Going to listen to the full review now.

After listening to the spill.com review they basically say it is Call of Duty: Battle: LA.
Basically just all CGI and action and with terrible dialogue. Good popcorn flick, but technically not very good.
District 9 is still the king of Alien Sci-Fi in the last decade.

Barf. The Transformers movies are a steaming pile of inadequacy. As a matter of fact, re-watching Transformers cartoons as an adult completely ruined my fond childhood memories.
