my advice go, do not drink more than a couple, always have a drink in your hand, try to avoid talking about work, slip out just before things start to turn but slip out so that nobody sees you so they don't know what time you left.
the biggesst rule is the next work day after the party avoid all gossip and dont talk about any person, but just that you had a great time, dont forget to thank the boss.
for those people that say avoid the Xmas party
that is not good advice, people you work with put in an effort to have a party and it is disrespectful not to at least show up. It just leaves a bad image of you not being truly part of the "team". I dont agree with this philosophy but it is just teh way it goes.
just make sure the people that matter see you and slip away early then.
There are two schools of thought with Christmas parties:
School 1: No one ever advanced their careers by actions or comments at a Christmas party, but many derailed them.
Therefore, if you subscribe to this school, you go, play it cool, smile, shake hands, and go home after a fairly quiet evening. (I subscribe to this one).
School 2: This is your chance to really make an impression on a boss or supervisor and leapfrog several in your company.
If you subscribe to this one, you will get smashed, use it as an excuse to sleep with somone older than you or tell someone off. This is a high risk, high reward type
scenario. If it works out, you will get a promotion or a really good reference for an alternate job. If it doesn't, you'll probably get fired, which is probably ok because you'll need that time to wash off the essence of the night (or week) before.
As much as school 2 sounds like a joke, it really does happen (and not just women either).
I will also say that as a person who subscribes to school 1, it is often extremely funny to watch someone try to subscribe with school 2 but not do a very good job of it.

Thanks. I was looking for some incidents, not what's been published many times already.
Nancy from accounting spilled white wine on her dress while running to the dance floor as Tom Cochrane kicked into "Life Is A Highway". It was hilarious!
...ah, I guess you had to be there.

The Following User Says Thank You to The Goon For This Useful Post:
Ours are epic; likely the best party I go to all year.
We usually book out Chill Winston in Gastown, Vancouver; invite all of our staff and many clients and pretty much anything goes.
Open bar, everyone is drunk, no one cares about "acting professional" and as long as you don't do anything too stupid and offensive you're good to go.
Most people in the company under under 40, and have a very work hard, play hard attitude, so we always have awesome parties.
and Cabbie was randomly there!

So, how was it GirlySports? Did you take admin assistant home?
heh it was pretty dull, older crowd. Very formal.
Everyone's married or have boyfriends/girlfriends.
I made sure I met everyone, ate enough, drank just enough, danced a bit.
What I found strange is that hardly any of the men danced. All the girls would just dance with each other while the men sat at the tables and talked to each other. Thought that was weird.
