I've stopped using the self-checkout at safeway because it goes screwy when you bring your own bag. I once asked the clerk the best way to use it with your own bags, and she said the thing to do is put all the bags in the loading area, have the attendant reset the scale, and then bag as normal. But even when I do this, I find that I need to get them to reset the scale a dozen times in a typical checkout session. If I'm just getting a couple things, I'll still use it.
On the other hand, at places like Home Depot and especially Ikea, it's a huge time saver.
