Having my dog on my lap while driving never effected me. She wasn't a rottweiler or anything, just a small 20lb dog, but when she was laying down on me it never effected what I was doing, and if she started moving around I took her off me. Unless the dog is a huge mofo I don't see the problem as long as they got their hands on the wheel.
Yeah, I'm the same way with my newborn son. He just sits there and can't grab the wheel yet. He's only 11 lbs now, so there's no real issue.

I haven't looked to hard, maybe somebody here already knows the answer. Does this new law include eating and drinking (not alcohol, obviously)?
It would suck to stop at the 7-11 on my way to work and have to leave the slurpee and corn-dog in the trunk.
I would think that a cop would use reasonable discretion when enforcing a law like this. Someone sipping a slurpee is not really hazardous. There are some things that I believe people are capable of doing while driving. Something as repetitive as taking a sip from a cup does not require actual attention (unless the slurpee is starting to get low, and it's kind of icing up, so you start driving with your knees so that you can hold the cup and stir it with the straw). Texting requires actual attention, as well as direct vision. You have to be looking at the phone to see what you're writing. If you're looking at the phone, you're not looking at the road.
I don't know what your problem is, Jolinar. This isn't some arbitrary law. It's the same (IMO) as drunk driving, or reckless driving. It's dangerous. Just now on Crowchild some ######ed bitch veered into my lane and then jerked her car back into hers. My curiosity got the best of me (as usual), so I sped up to see if she was fiddling with a phone, and sure as sh1t, there it was. Even in slippery conditions, this ho bag finds posting her stupid facebook status more important than arriving alive. And let's not mistake this post as me giving a crap about her. I care about me. Veering into my lane and taking my little comfort zone that I had between myself and the car in front of me was enough to make me slow down. You've seen those models where one car slows down and it eventually causes a traffic jam. Or worse, she could have been directly beside me and actually brushed my car and caused an accident. Holy f'n moly, I can only imagine my fury at being stranded on the side of the road in minus 15 because some stupid ass bitch crashed into me because she was texting.

Wow, I didn't realize there would be such a backlash for my dog comment.
I guess having my dog on my lap for 2 minutes every few months makes me a bad driver. Not to defend myself as your opinions are your own, but I assume no one has ever driven with a dog on their lap.

My dog sits in the front seat but she is not allowed on my lap. She used to try as a puppy but she knows to not even try it. Face it you just don't have the reaction time with a dog sitting on your lap.

I certainly haven't.
Not only is it dangerous, it demeaning to both you and the dog.

I don't think it makes anyone a bad driver as much as it has the potential to make one a very distracted driver. I've seen dogs all over the driver .....tail wagging in their face ....paws up on their shoulders....etc. Seems very distracting to me.
You can queue the mocking if you want, but I even have little straps that connect my dogs' harnesses to the seatbelts in the back seat. The thought of my dogs getting launched and injured (or worse) in an accident is horrifying. They don't mind it one bit.
They've always laid down in the back, strap or not, and don't ever try to get into the front.

Of course there is - people LOVE to tell OTHER people what not to do. With everything. Trust me, if someone does it, there's always a whole bunch of people waiting to tell them how evil it really is, whether it is or not.
So you'd rather have it legal then? Keep all the distracted jackasses texting or yacking away as they run over highway workers, cyclists, pedestrains. Hey, it's a risk you gotta take, all in the name of convenience!!
It was illegal before this law came into effect. If someone killed anyone while texting it would be a criminal offence not a provincial ticket, always has always will.
We don't have enough police NOW to deal with the idiot drivers on the road, you think they are going to be able to hand this additional law which is only a tax?
If they really wanted to make this work they would have included demerits but they didn't it is simply a tax.
The only way I see this as any benefit (if you want to call it that) is it will give the police ANY excuse to pull you over. Is that what you wanted? I mean as a law enforcement officer myself, if I had a mechanism to pull anyone for simply touching his Ipod as a gateway into my investigation, sure I will take it.
