it has nothing to do with being "better" than suburbanites and everything to do with being angry that new suburbs are being subsidized at the expense of EVERYONE - current suburbanites and core dwellers alike. We are paying developers tax money on top of the profits they already make - where does this make fiscal or any other kind of sense?

Unsustainable growth will kill this city in the long run unless it is addressed. You can only do so much with efficiencies in the budget while the portion devoted to the creation and upkeep of underlying infrastructure gets bigger and bigger before taxes have to go up substantially. Then outlying communities become more attractive places to live, and people move out of the city entirely, which causes the tax base to decrease, which means taxes get raised even higher, which causes more people to move out, and you end up in a spiral that you can't get out of.

We might already be at the point where long-term costs are going to severely affect tax rates. Look at all the neighborhoods built since the 80s where 25-30 years of infrastructure aging means that higher maintenance costs are coming into play - never mind all the major roads and interchanges built in the last decade that will require money to maintain and repair as well.

Shaw's coverage was pretty amateurish but I have to give them credit for actually sticking with the election and not Dancing With The Stars or something like that.

I have to admit, that I spent most of the night with the laptop as well, and things started to get exciting when I found this guy who started tweeting results from the polling stations before they were official: http://twitter.com/#!/dollhouseyyc

Shaws coverage made me laugh. The cast of characters were the most unintentionally hilarious people of the whole election.

Good to see hard poo man win, based solely on his name.

I'm curious what the deal was with the early Higgins lead? Which polls were those counted that had her winning after 20+ had been counted? Was that advance polls, hospital polls, polls taken on Broadcast hill, or what?

How dare we vote for a brown guy when there's a perfectly white alternative!

Advance/Hospital polls might have had a lot of people vote on name/face recognition alone. Perhaps they also got polls early from the few wards where her support was highest, like Ward 10.

I had Shaw on mute all last night, and it was much more enjoyable.

You'll regret doing so, but check out the Sun's comment section... depressing stuff. Luckily many of these racists make up the fringes of society.

I would be interested to see a study of Nenshi's voters analyzing how many of them have ever paid a nickel of property or business tax to this city in their life.

I'm quite happy with my numbers.

And I think it's pretty cool that both Vic and I got more votes than the 4th place mayoralty candidate.

I was surprised that Nenshi got 43% of the vote to McIver's 30% in ward 6.

I thought the margin would have been a lot closer, given that the ward is in the Calgary West federal riding and have always backed a Conservative, even if it is the clown Rob Anders.

I also thought more voters would lean towards McIver for the building of the West LRT and the new sprawl developing in and around the new station near 69 Street.

In the aldermanic vote, I picked John Yannisitos, who came 2nd to Pootmans. I thought the vote would've been split more as there were ten candidates and didn't expect to Pootmans win with 31%.

It would be more interesting if you just got over yourself already. You aren't that important and neither is how much tax you pay.

Clearly 43% of Ward 6 residents must not own land or own a business.

Well I know 14 people that voted Nenshi and all 14 of them pay property tax and 8 pay business tax. So we could safely say 157% of his supporters do.

I have heard the a few of the same types of comments as well, and in that sense I have stood up for the guy.

I have been vocal about my disdain for the guy, but it has absolutely nothing to do with his skin color or religion. People who make comments like that are just lame and sad.
