A movie about Facebook. Think about that. A movie...About Facebook. That's idiocy.
This post is embarrassing

Interview with Fincher and Reznor. Great renditon of In the Hall of the Mountain King too. I didn't recognize the name until I heard it, I'm sure everyone else knows it too even if you don't recognize the name of the song.

Quote:
When I got involved in spring of this year, I saw a rough cut of the title sequence and they had some jangly college rock temped in that immediately gave the film this John Hughes vibe. I thought, "Hmm, I hope he doesn't want anything like that."
Quote:
Then I went to another screening where they temped our music in and changed the college rock title-sequence song to the piece we made called "Hand Covers Bruise". When I saw it, I got goosebumps and thought, "Holy , that works. I'm into this now. It's completely changed what to expect from the film." ["Hand Covers Bruise" automatically plays in the background at the official Social Network site.] That provided a good template, and it went very smoothly from that point on.

Found another interview with Reznor that really backs up the point FanIn80 made earlier.

Quote:
Speaking of the film, what was your initial reaction to the idea of a “Facebook movie”? A ton of people seem to think it’s kind of a silly idea.
I myself had the reaction when I got a call from David Fincher, who’s one of my very favorite directors, saying ‘Would you like to score this film?’
‘Yes! What is it?’
‘It’s about social networks. It’s about the founding of Facebook.’
‘Hmm… really? How can that be interesting?’”
When I actually read the script and knowing David was involved — and David brings a level of excellence to what he’s interested in and what he works on — I knew this wasn’t going to be what I feared it could be in lesser hands. [And it became]: How can I help change people’s preconceived notions of what a Facebook movie is — the same feeling I myself had when I first heard of it…. It’s not about Facebook, so much. It’s about people and greed and creation and entitlement. It’s not about how people use Facebook, necessarily.

Time Magazine:

Quote:
The Social Network, for all its 21st-century interests, is connected to social dramas from the 1970s: fact-based films that created severely flawed protagonists and addressed big, contemporary themes, never stopping to worry about the youth market or the Hollywood edict of a happy ending. The honor roll would include The Godfather, The Parallax View, Taxi Driver, Serpico, All the President's Men and Network, a scalding satire that foresaw the rise of demagogic newscasters and the know-nothing America whose outrage they could cannily tap. (See the 100 best movies of all time.)

The Social Network's most obvious touchstone is Orson Welles' Citizen Kane; Fincher has called this "the Citizen Kane of John Hughes movies." IndieWire's Todd McCarthy has detailed The Social Network's kinship to that official Greatest American Film: a rich young man's rise in a burgeoning medium (there the daily newspaper), as recollected by his colleagues; his difficulty communicating with women; his estrangement of his best friend, etc. But there are also similarities between Zuckerberg and Kane's director, star and co-writer. Immense in achievement and ego, both men revolutionized their media. Both wanted their names stamped all over their work (Facebook, in its early days, was proclaimed on every page "a Mark Zuckerberg Production"). Both men alienated their early sponsors and friends. And both were amazing, almost unnatural, prodigies. Citizen Kane, Welles' first feature film, opened two weeks before his 26th birthday. Zuckerberg became the world's youngest billionaire by 23; The Social Network opens four months and two weeks after his 26th birthday.

How do I not know this movie? Time puts it in the same category as those other great films and I don't think I know of it. Netflix here I come.

Sigh.

For the umpteenth time, it's not a movie about Facebook. The film is a semi-fictional ("inspired by real events") biopic about an egotistical young billionaire who just happens to be the founder of Facebook. With a few minor revisions to the script, I'm sure Sorkin could have just as easily made this film about Bill Gates or Steve Jobs when they were in their early 20s.

When I first saw the commercials, I also initially thought "There is no way I'm watching a movie about Facebook", especially since I hate Facebook! But these reviews are definitely compelling. I'll give it a watch when it's on DVD. It's certainly not a $15 AVX movie anyway lol.

Still waiting for the first negative review. Will it be someone credible, or will it be Armund White? Anyway, my skepticism has been greatly tempered, and I'll probably see this on Thursday

The really awesome thing is that the people who are incapable of understanding this movie isn't about Facebook, probably aren't going to be capable of understanding the script anyway - so this is all a moot conversation.

Everything I've read so far tells me that this movie is like an intellectual action flick (insert metaphor of words instead of bullets). The ultra fast dialogue that isn't dumbed-down to typical Hollywood standards is one of the biggest reasons for all the favourable reviews. Finally, a movie that doesn't really care if you're smart enough to figure out what's going on or not.

There's nothing that pisses me off about a movie more than watching a guy walk through a doorway with a puzzled expression, followed by someone in the room explaining that the guy is puzzled and what exactly is puzzling him.

35 reviews on Rotten Tomatoes and it is still at 100%? Amazing. I think anyone that is going to avoid this movie because they "don't support facebook" are going to be missing out on one of the best movies of the year.

This movie would've been better if it was about twitter. Facebook is so 2008.

He's a quote from Sorkin that hopefully will explain it a little better:

Quote:
It really didn't have much at all to do with Facebook itself. I wasn't on Facebook. I don't spend a lot of time on the Internet, and social networking wasn't really part of my life. But the story itself! There are elements of it that are as old as storytelling: friendship and loyalty, class, jealousy, betrayal — all those kinds of things that were being written about 4,000 years ago. It struck me as a great big classic story. And those classic elements were being applied to something incredibly contemporary. (Read about how Facebook is redefining Internet privacy.)

Yes, but an orgy of men is less gay than twitter.
