This should explain it, I had no clue.

The dBZ Scale
The colors on the legend are the different echo intensities (reflectivity) measured in dBZ. "Reflectivity" is the amount of transmitted power returned to the radar receiver. Reflectivity covers a wide range of signals (from very weak to very strong). So, a more convenient number for calculations and comparison, a decibel (or logarithmic) scale (dBZ), is used.
The dBZ values increase as the strength of the signal returned to the radar increases. Each reflectivity image you see includes one of two color scales. One scale represents dBZ values when the radar is in clear air mode (dBZ values from -28 to +28). The other scale represents dBZ values when the radar is in precipitation mode (dBZ values from 5 to 75).
The scale of dBZ values is also related to the intensity of rainfall. Typically, light rain is occurring when the dBZ value reaches 20. The higher the dBZ, the stronger the rainrate. Depending on the type of weather occurring and the area of the U.S., forecasters use a set of rain rates which are associated to the dBZ values. These values are estimates of the rainfall per hour, updated each volume scan, with rainfall accumulated over time. Hail is a good reflector of energy and will return very high dBZ values. Since hail can cause the rainfall estimates to be higher than what is actually occurring, steps are taken to prevent these high dBZ values from being converted to rainfall.

So it appears that
  1. the radar you posted is in percipitation mode
  2. that the big scary purple thing is 0 DBz
  3. 0 DBz = no precipiation, as precp starts at 20+ DBz
  4. that radar isnt all to scary - if we see red, yellow, orange though...

All the above is correct.

Also remove /latest_loop.gif and you can look back over the last 3 years. I will find a big storm and post it

Yeah, today could be a decent storm day.

The purple stuff is just noise on the radar, ignore it. The numbers are the height of the clouds, 11.5 is pretty high. So, even though you don't see the red's and yellows (they are usually hard to see on the Weather Mod radar) it doesn't mean things aren't happening.

edit: and what time is this bad boy going to hit? (I tried calling David Spence, but he was busy)

No, the Strathmore one is Environment Canada's and it has been pretty good this year. The Weather Mod one has been down more this year.

How do you feel about the WeatherNetwork one? (I know its the EnviroCan radar, but it seems to offer a better map and forecasted patterns)..

edit: That radar shows it hitting NE/NW Calgary at around 6:15, followed by another smaller band that'll hit most of the city.

They need to launch yellow and green spermies to further defend Calgary.
Blue is covering Didsbury but only white is covering our fair city.

I don't use it because the radar is low res - by that I mean only 5 colours for rain - and that isn't specific enough.

So far the stuff today has been petering out on the foothills, might be a while before something makes it to the QEII.

Anyone getting hit with anything? I hope this hail garbage stops. If I get my car fixed after the first hail storm and I get hit with another I'm gonna be pissed.

Just a heads up to anyone south of High River, I just got back from that storm and it was pretty insane. There is going to be reports of some huge hail and a lot of it. Anyone traveling south on QEII in the next hour or so should be real careful as you approach the storm.

By the way, BlackArcher and I have a Facebook group for storm chasers and pics are usually uploaded to the page after big storms. The group is Storm Chasers of the Canadian Prairies.

Was there anything going on? I saw some lightning going on far in the south (not sure how far). We got a slight trickle in the North.
