they are pretty bad this year, but in comparison to Ft McMurray where I grew up, they're really not that bad.

So what do you guys think is the best alternative to DEET in repelling mosquitoes? I hate having to shower after I apply the stuff.

Gasoline works quite well for me.

Try the Off Skinsation for kids, it's only 5% deet and doesn't smell at all like deet.
