Anybody on here with a Tour? If so what OS are you currently using? I'm using 5.0.0.419. I would like to change to something better if I could. The current OS has been draining my battery super fast.

I tried 3 different OS's and couldn't get more than a day out of it. On a heavy email/bbm day I would be dead by 7:00 pm.

My new Bold, however, get's 2 - 3 days easy.

The original OS wasn't bad. When I switched it went south in a hurry. Originally I thought it was the battery. But it didn't make any difference when I replaced it. I read on Crackberry that that OS was draining the battery prematurely. I can't get through half a day without recharging.

Does your phone get abnormally hot as well? We had one user that reported the same type of thing, and his Tour felt like a mini heater. Telus said it was a defective unit replaced it under warranty.

Once in a while. But nothing out of the ordinary I don't think. When I have noticed it hot is when I'm listening to baseball on it while it is sitting in the sun. So I figured it was from working and sitting in the direct sunlight.

great thread guys. I was going to come in here and ask what type of phone/bb I should get.

My new job gives me a small amount of $ each month to put towards a cell/bb plan and I wasn't sure what to use. I only use it for email, the calendar, and the phone - essentially business purposes. I had a BB before as it was provided by the previous firm and it was fine, but wasn't sure what else was out there.

In any event, any suggestions on:
1) What model to purchase?
2) What plan to purchase when the use of email and phone will be "moderate" at best (like ~2 phone calls and 15 emails a day)

Well, I'm a little biased I guess, but why not get the top of the line right now, the Bold 9700? I use it mainly for messaging, phone calls and email and it works great for me.

As for plan, not sure...guess it depends on who you are with. The wife and I share 1GB of data a month and it works just fine for us so far.

My wife doesn't have a BB, only a work cell phone.

What, our shared plan? We pay about $140 a month for our package. You could most likely get a very good package for about $60 - $70 a month for one phone.

Interesting smartphone numbers from comScore published on the 8th. Despite Google strides, marketshare for BlackBerry products (RIM), still continue to be strong. These numbers are U.S. based only, but you get the idea. RIM still has just about 1/2 the market for smartphones. Thought I would post this for those that say Android and iPhones are taking over the world. Sorry, there still are a ton of BB's out there guys...

Smartphone Platform Market Share

49.1 million people in the U.S. owned smartphones during the three months ending in May, up 8.1 percent from the corresponding February period. RIM was the leading mobile smartphone platform in the U.S. with 41.7 percent share of U.S. smartphone subscribers, followed by Apple with 24.4 percent share and Microsoft with 13.2 percent. Google saw significant growth during the period, up 4.0 percentage points to capture 13.0 percent of smartphone subscribers, while Palm rounded out the top five with 4.8 percent. Despite losing share to Google Android, most smartphone platforms continue to gain subscribers as the smartphone market overall continues to grow.

Would seem Apple and Windows Mobile phones are taking more of the hit for Android phones than anyone really.

I think once RIM comes up with something new, they'll make a stronger push.

Interesting thing is watching those numbers right during the release of the iPhone 4.

Do you need to sync up with your Outlook Calendar on your computer at work? (ie IT has you through a BES server?) If so, clearly BB is your way to go. I'd wait until the new 9800 is released next month(ish) and you can decide between it or discounted 9700's. Data plans for you should be pretty minimal, I would look towards the lower end of the plans, unless you start using the browser a lot more.

If not, I'd certainly give the Android or iPhone options a look in addition to BB.

Yes, obviously the 4 will give Apple a push for sure. RIM has the 9800 coming (which I don't think I will be a fan of, that's why I bought the 9700 now - don't like slide out KB's and I really didn't want another touch screen again). RIM also has version 6 of their OS as well as a new web browser, so there will be a considerable push from RIM soon too.

Funny how that works isn't it? Even just in my personal network I know more people with BBs than iPhones. Yet all you hear is Android/iPhone hype.

In my Strategy course (the capstone Business course at Haskayne) we looked at a bunch of tech companies and smartphone companies. Apple, RIM, Google, Dell. It really surprised me how strong RIM is in the smartphone industry but nobody is aware of that.

One major thing that RIM has going for it in the future is the fact that everything is optimized on the BB. A data plan for a BB uses a lot less data than one for the iPhone. Carriers are getting a lot of stress put on them right now, and that's only going to increase as more people begin to use smartphones. RIM has an advantage there because everything goes through their servers and it puts a lot less stress on the networks.
