Not reading into it too much, but the only semi-sucess I can think of in the last decade or two for Canada was under a European coach....

The last time we went to the WC was also under a European. Canadian hockey coaches get hired around the world to improve their local teams, I don't see a problem with us doing the same.

Also, given that the CSA's annual budget is around $12 mil, and teams get $8+1m even if losing 20-0 each of the first 3 games, there's more then just the legitimacy/give something for youth to aspire to, angle.

http://www.guardian.co.uk/football/2...10-prize-money

Regardless, bottom line is that the team needs strong leadership...that comes first from a coach, second from the CSA. The players they have are decent talent wise, but they need to feel like a team. With the team scattered through Europe and US and Canada, there's a whole ton of excuses why they can't feel like a team compared to most smaller nations (geograpically or otherwise).

That is the biggest problem...feeling like a team.

You have a strong, solid coach that players want to play for, you then get players excited to fly back from Europe and leave their club teams to play both the Trinidad and Tobagos and Jamicas in friendlies...and that means when the games start to matter in qualifying, you're more prepared, both for the trip, and as a team. Right now, with the team all over the place and no real direction and no leader running the ship, there's not a lot of motivation coming back all the way from Europe for games that mean nothing 2.5 years away from 2014 qualifying.

Also, the CSA needs to step up and be a strong leader too. Get as many matches as possible for the team. Go out and get that "leader" coach. Go the extra mile to get all players over here to play all the friendly matches they line up. Right now its run like a voluteer organization; again, having the decently talented players you've got made feel supported by the CSA and treated like a valued professional, instead of demanding them to come over, or expecting them to come over on their own dime, would do wonders for morale and team building.

IMO, with that extra time playing together, knowing they have a coach which will make them better as a team, and a soccer federation backing and supporting them at every turn, they'll gain that crucial team continuity and certainly have the ability to come out of Concacaf in 2014 and beyond.

That's all well and good if it doesn't mean paying a premium simply because a guy has a German accent. My whole issue with the foreign coach argument is when people start talking about bringing in a B or C list European coach and throwing a bunch of cash at them. I really don't care about nationality of the coach, I just care about spending a limited budget intelligently.

Well since our best players choose to play for Whales or Germany or other nations, I'd say not good.

Canadian Soccer = Edmonton Oilers

All of Canada's home qualifying games should be in Inuvik, preferably in the fall or winter. Then you don't need good players, just players who are acclimatized to playing in cold weather.

Article from the Globe discussing this very topic.

http://www.theglobeandmail.com/sport...rticle1635195/

By MLS fiat, each team must have its own youth academy for the purpose of developing local players as a source of affordable, franchise-sustaining talent. Clubs have exclusive rights to players in a defined area and can put academy players on their “homegrown” list, preventing other teams from drafting them

For each of the three clubs, the annual academy budgets will approach seven figures, marking the biggest private investment ever made in soccer development in Canada.

Didn't we qualify in 86 by putting the deciding game in St. Johns in the fall? Take that you central American bums!

IMO, we're probably a generation away from another world Cup appearance. The growth of MLS in Canada's three largest markets will spur interest in the sport, and we will start to see talented kids coming up the pipeline in about a decade or so.

For comparison sake, consider the spike in the number of Canadians in baseball and how the growth coorelates to the time when the Jays were winning titles.

Yup! The Central Americans couldn't even find St. John's on the map!

I know some people wouldn't like this but since I was born in the Czech Republic and my son had the eligibility to ensure he gets to play in a world cup, I would tell him to choose the path that will most likely get you there. Right now that is the Czech Republic. Now I can use different logic for example hockey. It is harder to play for Canada then the Czech Republic, so if he was not good enough for Canada but only good enough for the Czechs. Then he should play fo the team that wants him. The same would be for soccer.

That's just my opinion and until rules are changed, if what I am thinking is correct, then the more options he has the better.

Don't be fooled Canada is not the only country that loses players to other countries you see it all over the place. I would be more pissed off if I was polish because there seems to be a decent influx of them migrating to Germany and Poland right now has a better chance of qualifying then Canada

Everybody's entitled to their opinion. I personally don't think anyone born and raised in a country who never lived anywhere else should have other options but as along as FIFA has that loophole it's your right to choose.

The ironic thing here is that Czech Republic has a marginally better chance than Canada of playing there, we've made 1 of the last 7 and Czechs are what, 1 out of 4 or 5?

I don't think its right I agree with you but until they change the rule you will continue to see tons of this stuff.

Yes the Czechs necessarily haven't been a power house and they're turn usually comes in cycles. They are obviously in rebuild mode at the moment. They have played in Euros, which with only 16 teams making it doesn't make it easy. This is changing to 24 teams after 2012. I tend to think this is the second biggest soccer tournament in the world from a country representation point of view.

But anyways this is about Canada, so I won't let it go off track.

Do I think Canada will make it? I believe in my lifetime they will. Sooner or later they will get some breaks with players and some luck on the field. Canada will be there again one day.

But it would be harder to make the Czech team than the Canada team right?
I don't blame players for leaving Canada, the CSA does nothing for them.

I say if you're enough to make any team, go for it.

I don't think that any other feds really do more for a players career than the CSA, it just happens if the team achieves and you get to play on a bigger stage. We don't expect Hockey Canada to create a career for NHL players any more than we should for the CSA.

The Czech team is harder to make and definitely a better side. If your goal is to make the world cup it's not that big of a gap is all I was saying. Czechs do get to play for the UEFA Euro championship which is an awesome tourney.

That's right. Didn't one of the teams fly to Saint John?
