Oops, sorry didn't see this before. It's not a big deal but you notice how all the cops and everybody are just generally giving you a bad time during the first mission? Because they think you're a mall cop and all the hostages are dead, etc?

If you go there early enough, you can actually save all the hostages who are dead in that room because of the gas bomb. There are various ways to sneak in and disable the bomb. If you rescue all the hostages and then subdue the leader of the gang without him escaping, without killing him, and with all hostages surviving...the cops and everybody treat you as a hero. You can also visit the survivors for some rewards later in Detroit.

If you're having trouble with the boss, you can do what I did. I hacked a turret from earlier in the level, set it to attack enemies and brought it into the boss fight.

Yeah it's kind of difficult doing it without augs. However, if you can, grab the plasma rifle in the far left of the room, you can use that on him. Also, use mines/grenades and have him come to you. Usually if you keep moving to the opposite side of him and wait, he'll appear on the opposite side and try to shoot you with a plasma rife. However, those rounds are slow so you can get a couple of shots into him before ducking for cover, and make your way across the room again

Do you have fully upgraded weapon?
On my non-lethal stealth playthrough, I put everything into my revolver and made it my boss killing weapon.
Basically, keep you distance as much as you can, and wait for him to start shooting from across to room. Rince and repeat. It worked at the highest level of difficulty for me. Another opening is when he throws grenades. You should be able to get a few shots off before moving away from the grenades

I haven't even met a boss yet but killing a boss doesn't ruin non-lethal?

Bosses and robots (including turrents and cameras) don't count if you're trying to do a non-lethal playthrough.

EDIT: Make sure you don't kill anyone at the very beginning of the game as well, when terrorist attack attack the lab in order to preserve the nonlethal achievement
