I think you answered my other question... but just to confirm....
AppleTV can be preloaded with content, taken across the city and played on a friends TV without needing to be within the vicinity of your iTunes library.
-or-
You can stream wirelessly from your iTunes library to your Apple TV without needing to move the data to your AppleTV's hard drive.

Heh. My poor friend. It's gonna be a while before he gets his hands on this thing to watch E.R.. I'm havin' too much fun.
But I gather that there is no means for me to use this with my standard def TV upstairs that only has composite and s-video? What would I need to play them on a computer monitor? Female DVI to male HDMI adapter?

I don't own an Apple TV, so I am making the assumtion that these are the outputs you have
I am pretty sure this claims it will work to connect and get video to your TV, but it is ungodly expensive for what you are doing with it. You would of course need to use whichever audio cables to get the sound across. I did read some threads and some people claim Apple has a cable for this, but I couldn't find it.
As for the monitor, I assume from your description that this is what you would need.

Or buy the same thing for $5 at monoprice. Which is what I did.
And hooking it up to the computer monitor upstairs for $5 is a heck of a lot cheaper than the Apple TV to S-video adapter or composite adapter.

I must have been blind, because monoprice is the first place I looked. I could only find them dvi to hdmi

Bear in mind that there *might* be issues playing back protected content (ie. iTunes purchased movies) via a HDMI->DVI adapter if your monitor is not HDCP compliant. Not all DVI devices support HDCP - I had to specifically hunt around for an HDCP compliant monitor a few years ago (say 3 years ago), although maybe things have changed in this regard.
In other words - that old 17” LCD in your closet probably won’t work for protected content (but should work fine for other stuff)

Announced today.
http://store.apple.com/ca/browse/hom...co=MTM3NTM1Nzk
Like the price, but I'm underwhelmed with the 720p limit and video format support. I didn't expect MKV/AVI support but I expected 1080p.
If they get all the networks on board I'll be all over the $0.99 show rentals.
Really hoping for Center Ice & Sunday Ticket support - though I can't see that happening this season.

No TV rentals? No apps? No 1080p? Can't stream avi or mkv. With Netflix coming to Canada what is the point of this device? If you already own a PS3 or Xbox 360 just grab PS3 Media Server.

It has Netflix support, and 99 cent tv rentals (unless those aren't available in Canada?)

Only movie rentals in Canada. And I already have a PS3 and an Xbox 360. Both of those consoles will be Netflix compatible. Now I do admit that even with those limitations the $119 price of the unit is still quite attractive for the mass market. The TV rental situation could change in the future but I'm not holding my breath. Given that it runs on iOS this thing should have app support out of the box. With the ability to use iDevices as remotes or controllers an app store on the iTV could be killer. As it stands right now it is just a $120 device that you buy so you can have iTunes on your TV.

Any idea when this is available in stores? I get that it may be available off the website, but I'm not a big fan of ordering and waiting.

If you compare the US and Canadian apple sites the tv show rental isn't the only thing missing ... no mention of same-day HD movie releases
Dammit movie industry, I want to give you my money. Why the F don't you want my money!?

AFAIK (could be wrong as I don't know every networks standard)
720p = 60 frames per second
1080p = 24 frames per second
Until networks start filming 1080p in true 60fps 720p will actually look better for fast moving shows like hockey/football.
