So, pricing it out:

iMac 21.5 base model
Apple Care
iWork
iPod Touch 8GB
Canon Pixma MP560
$1904.95
then, I'd get
$219+$100+$30 back in Mail in rebates
=$1555.95
minus whatever I could sell the iPod touch for, say $200.

Roughly $1350.

(choosing iWork preinstalled changes the delivery for within 24 hours to 2-4 business days, so i picked it separately, which means that I have to apply for mail in rebate instead of instant rebate)

Well it looks like my wife is going back to school and now wants a Mac. We're both Windows users so before I take advantage of this back to school offer, I was wondering if there were any "must have" software programs that we would have to get. Do we need virus, spyware and malware software? If so, what do you suggest? Does Apple provide built-in data recovery or backup software or should we purchase something else?

I apologize for the stupid questions but I seriously haven't touched a Mac in over 15 years (Mac IIsi running OS7.2) and I have no idea what is out there.

Thanks for your help.

You won't be needing an anti-virus/anti-spyware program.

Snow Leopard has a backup program called "Time Machine" built in!

If you make slideshows alot, Keynote is much better then Powerpoint, but I prefer Word to Pages.

quoted for truth.

keynote isn't just better for the 3d transitions, overall it is a much more powerful package. magic move is wonderful! you can put videos in the background and fade the opacity. the end result is always much better looking.
