It's not just the missionaries that have caused people to dislike/distrust Mormons. Their beliefs are very strange. I've done some study on this faith. Having said that, I agree that they're friendly, decent, honest, great people. In fact, the ones I've know are some of the best people I've ever known. Maybe it's something about leaving jobs because I know a Mormon who left the company I worked for and game my a copy of the Book of Mormon also. Just like the others above, he never tried to get me into his faith, but just gave me the signed book.

All I know about the Mormon faith is that they throw by far the best luau on Oahu (albeit alcohol free) and their temple and university are amazing to go and visit to look at.

How is this possible? I'm pretty sure 90% of us have see the ubiquitious sight of a white shirt / black tied Alfalfa look alike with the black "elder" name tag traipsing around the city.
It's as easy to spot as Hari Krishnas....
That said, I worked closely with a mormon guy before and learned a lot. His mission was to chicago's projects and basically hung out with the homies. Luckily, he's a wicked basketball player and got along fine as he could hold his own. One of the things he had to deliver was all the free bibles that people would order off the TV infomercials - he said it was amazing that number of people that just wanted something because it was "free". Nothing nefarious about the guy, just a solid stand up guy.

One used to be able to tell how well off a Mormon's family was by how far away they went for their mission.

I've even been in the LDS Family History Center here Calgary a few times, doing some family genealogy research. The people working there were extremely helpful but not once did they try to convert me.
If they did perhaps come to my door, they were obviously very polite and when I told them I wasn't interested they must have immediately moved on without trying to push the matter further.... thus making no lasting impression on me at all.

Most Mormons go on missions away from their hometown. They rarely go door to door like the "J-Dubs" as they call them.

I am confused though. Is he saying that the Calgary tower is the same as the CN Tower? What does that have to with a mormon temple in Calgary? Are they making the Calgary tower into a temple?
I can't follow this thread. It is too confusing...

Don't worry, I just thought it was silly that someone was saying that two spires that are vaugely simmilary shaped, constitues one being an "exact replica" of the other.
Back on topic though, I'm pretty close to this thing, and as long as it doesn't cause major traffic snarls, I think it'll be cool to have such an awesome piece of arcitecture near my house.
Plus if I ever want to sell, it's gotta help the resale of my house as all the Mormons in town will probably want to live close to this thing. Hooray.

To an outsider every religion has things that are very strange.

My best friend is Mormon and we got to talking about religion one day and this topic came up. The reasoning behind it is that they are supposed to avoid anything that be addictive (Caffeine, Drugs. etc.)

Religion, as a whole is a bit of a joke. This particular one to me for some reason is the biggest of them all. Its as if it was made up in a time when people really should have known better. No different if the Raelians caught on today.
No black people in heaven? ok... Let the US government change church doctrine? Ok, really credible. Native Americans are the lost tribe of Israel? Really?
nice enough people and everything. Just sayin'

I'm afraid you've been misinformed. There is nothing in the doctrine of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints (Mormons) that says anything about black people not being allowed into heaven. On the contrary, Mormons believe that "all nations, kindreds, tongues, and people" should be given the opportunity to hear the gospel and choose for themselves, which is why the Mormons have such a massive missionary movement.
I'm not sure what you are referring to when you say that the US government determines church doctrine.
As far as some North Americans being descendants of the 12 tribes of Israel, why is this so preposterous? Everyone came from somewhere. There are theories that some groups of first nations peoples originated in Asia and migrated across the Bering Strait. Early civilizations such as the Phoenecians were accomplished mariners as early as 1500 BC - a transatlantic crossing at that time would have been a stretch, but not impossible.
Someone asked about the Mormon baptismal fonts and why they were supported by oxen. There are always 12 of them (oxen) and they symbolize the 12 tribes of Israel.
