After all this talk on CP, I told my cousin about it and he went and bought the Mazda 3 with the GFX package from my ex-roommates dealership. Cost + $700! He was telling me about the new Mazda 6 speed coming out in 3 months. AWD!
Can you hook me up with the same deal?????

I'll ask him. I kinda got an awesome deal because he still owes me some money. His dealership is in Kimberly though.

Nope, if it's being registered in Alberta you won't have to pay PST.

Your grad rebate should be closer to $750, and you probably would need to have graduated from a 2 year program within the last 2-3 years.
Yeah, I would not say anything about the Grad rebate till the the end of the deal but if they give you a smoking deal you may have a harder time not having to include that rebate into the already given discount(if u understand that??).
Any trade? That could change everything. GOOD LUCK!!

I saw someone mention Civic is more bang for the buck.. hmmm I have never heard anyone refer to the civic as bang for the buck.. You get nothing when you buy the civic, and if you want to get a loaded civic, it's going to be around 22000 - 24000.. and for the same price, you get the GT with GFX. I think the 3 is more bang for the buck then the civic ever will.. but if you want bang for the buck, check out the spec v

I've had a Mazda 3 GT (all except sport pack and leather) for just over a year now. Before that we had a '96 protege and then a 2000 protege. While the protege were fun little cars to drive the Mazda 3 blows them completely out of the water. Fun to drive, responsive etc. etc. etc. Be warned though you do feel the road with these cars but I personally like that.

They've changed the engine options since they first came out from what I understand. The first few months of production you could get the same engine that is in the Mazda 6 (which is the engine we have). It is very nearly over-powered but damn does the car go! They've brought the horsepower down a bit since the initial production runs (according to our salesman).

As has been mentioned by some already the European Focus base is completely different from the north american one. And the European Focus is supposed to be one of the better cars around.

From the '96 protege (4 years), 2000 protege (5 years) and this car we have had no major problems with any of the cars (other than a few sensor calibrations the first month or so....sometimes the dealership forgets to set them for the local environment). Nor have we had any problems with Mazda service in three different North American cities. I believe the '96 and 2000 proteges have some of the best service histories for that class of car. We also had no problem finding several options for winter tires in this maritime climate.

The Mazda 3 is not really an entry level car anymore. They've brought it a step above the other cars commonly in that category...the price and I think quality reflects that.

Overpowered?

The 2 engines offered are exactly the same since day one, unless I totally missed out on something.

Everything you say about the Euro Focus is true, supposedly a great car.

This came from our Mazda dealership as well as a second Mazda dealership in our area (they are owned by different people and quite competitive). Both independently said the engine in the intial run was considerably higher than the 160 HP that is currently used and quite honestly I didn't believe it. However, after driving two from each of the lots (one from the intial run and one from a later) they seemed to be telling the truth. Which is all I really said. I'm well aware of what the documentation says. But it's neither here nor there when the engine is worked in there is signficant get up and go...almost too much even on dry roads. But almost too much is quite honestly the fun part! The larger engine has good power...not sportscar power but more than the bulk of similar cars. All I know is you can make it from Halifax to Smmerside PEI in 2h 15 min with a stop at Canadian Tire

They have been using the 160 hp engine since day one... except if you are in Japan where they have the 2.3 172 hp engine. Unless they put more restrictions on the later batch, I am sure they are all rated at 160 hp at the crank.

I got the first mz3 in calgary, and mine is rated at 160hp from the window sticker. I would not use the word overpowered tho for the mazda 3. overpowered is something like... the M5.

I appreciate everyones comments and opinions on the new Mazda 3. I am leaning towards getting the GT with the GFX package.

Does anyone have any tips on how I can get the best deal possible? I was hoping to pay slightly higher then the invoice price and maybe even getting some options added for free. I am going to take advantage of the $500 post secondary graduate rebate as well

Is there any negotiation secrets that I should know? Any hints would be greatly appreciated as I know dealerships can give good deals, so I hope that I can be one of those lucky SOBs

Thanks again guys!

Okay, so I have another question. I am going to the Mazda Dealerships tomorrow. Should I dress casual or do you guys think I should wear like a dress shirt or soemthing like that?

If I wear a dress shirt, they might think that I can afford more and not lower the price.

But then again, if I wear a dress shirt, they might be more willing to treat me like a businessman and negotiate a lower price with me

Which theory is correct? Any suggestions is greatly appreciated
Thanks guys!

Just wear whatever you want... it won't change what the salesman goals are... to get the highest price possible.

Don't tell him about the post-secondary rebate until AFTER you agree to a price. If you tell him before, he will likely not be willing to go down that much.

Coming soon from AlbertGQ:

Going to CO-OP.. what to wear?

Seriously though, you worry too much. YOU are the one buying a car, you don't owe them any favours. If you don't get what you want, you walk away. (And often in car sales, they come crawling after you).
