That said, she deserves the honour more than anyone.
You raise a good point. She should be offered it first. If she takes the honor, great. If not, understandable.

As for why she'd want to do it - to honor the memory of her mom. Same reason why she went through with the olympics.

Bilodeau or Gilles Hamelin or some medal athlete from Whistler or Vancouver, BC.

Hamelin is a good safe choice, back to back golds 45 mins apart is pretty impressive.

No, I think there was a break in communication. Probably a french-english thing. Hamelin was not chosen by the COC to carry the flag. Or at least not yet. But his response to "are you carrying the flag for Canada" and his response being "yes, thank you" doesn't seem to make sense, but the media took the "yes" and reported it everywhere.

They've just announced it's going to be Rochette, not Hamelin.

Was there any doubt that it would be Rochette. Great choice.

Wow!

Someone in the media had the wrong source earlier today, huh?

Excellent choice though.

Rochette is definitely the right choice. Everything about this woman's performance for the past ten days leaves me in awe. Her strength and determination, as well as her passion and emotion, exemplify what an olympic athlete should be. Watching her skate was very moving for me, and I'm not a figure skating fan at all. Seeing her encore performance in the gala last night almost choked me up - what a beautiful tribute to her mother. I don't like Celine Dion but that song she picked was perfect.

I can't think of anyone better suited to carry our flag than Joannie Rochette.

While I appreciate the struggles that Rochette has gone through and overcome, and can certainly relate to losing a loved one, I actually would have preferred Bilodeau. I really enjoyed his personality and humility, as well as his close relationship with his brother. I was much more emotional during his medal ceremony/event.

Luckily for Canada, there were no bad choices. Our athletes were spectacular and really any of them would have been great.

Hayley definitely would have been great, as well. She deserves a lot of praise and recognition for what she has done for womens hockey.

Team Canada Can't go wrong selecting Joannie Rochette. Closing is going to be fantastic.

Ha!

True - but he would have only been bearing the flag, so I would have been disappointed anyways. I just like the guy and his story.
