Neither book nor movie.

I think Mayer's a pretty solid guitar player. I only really like two of his albums and think the newest one is pretty bland. His lyrics aren't anything to write home about, but guys like Clapton and Scofield don't invite just anyone to play with them. I'm not trying to say he's Jeff Beck or Derek Trucks, but he's better than average.

John's Nine Douchiest Quotes:

http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2010/0..._n_465806.html

We always had an inkling that John Mayer was a ###### -- ever since we heard lyrics like like "You got this room for two / One thing I've left to do / Discover me / Discovering you." But now it seems that Mayer is not content with his lyrics doing the talking, and jumps at the chance to out-###### himself with every interview he gives. We've compiled the douchiest gems of the bunch for your enjoyment.

Look, I think John Mayer is a terrible musician. His music is derivative and poor, and he's an average guitar player at best. He's like a much less interesting and less talented Nick Drake. It's radio-friendly cookie-cutter crap. Objectively speaking.

Ordinarily, I wouldn't care enough to even post about it. 90% of popular music is garbage anyway. He just... doesn't stand out from the crowd, that's all. I'm sure he's a super guy, but it is weird for such an average musician to be so overrated. He's like the Brian Campbell of popular music.

What's more interesting to me is that you first claim it's all a matter of opinion, and then feel the need to defend him.

If that's true, then you shouldn't be proclaiming that people who like John Mayer's music "have no taste"....should you?

In fairness, I never made the claim that musical taste was entirely a matter of opinion--that was Mayer. And I would never have said that--not only does it replace knowledge and expertise with relativism, but it's an absurd claim on its face anyway. It would mean that there is no objective difference between Milli Vanilli and Mozart. No-one seriously entertains that possibility.
