Am I the only one here who thought it was a pretty stupid movie with a stupid plot and terrible acting?
Frankly I thought it sucked and if you were watching it and you were over the age of 14, you were probably bored as hell and laughing at the terrible special effects and the atrocious acting.
If I was a movie review critic I would have given it two thumbs down.

Its a satire. Like the Onion news except a space soldier movie.

It's no train ride, that's for sure.

Because it's the 23rd century and presumably we have become somewhere between a type 2 and type 3 civilization. (The fact that we can travel to distant parts of the galaxy, but do not yet control the entire galaxy would put us between a type 2 and type 3)
Many scientists propose that in order to become a type 1 civilization (which we are decently close to becoming) the planet would basically need to have one language, one religion, one government etc, which is what is described in the movie.
Basically, if you want to be a solar or galactic civilization, you need to throw away your cultural differences and unite as one group. It's not likely in the future you would have space ships and fleets belonging to one certain nation, ie US Fleet, Chinese Fleet etc, rather they would most likely belong to an "Earth" fleet, where there is a common language and culture.
