The Nominations are out.

Full list Here.

Avatar & Hurt Locker get 9 Noms each, Huge Surprise

The only ones on the list (Best Picture) that surprised me, were "Up" & "District 9".

Whoa whoa whoa ... can I make a request that we go back and white out the (500) Days of Summer spoilers? I really liked that movie and if I read the two posts here about it I'd be a little annoyed. I realize the ending is implied by the opening text, but still ... As for my thoughts on it: I feel it's a great date movie and romance is the underlying theme. Sure it didn't work out for them in the end, but that's not to say it doesn't end happily. Is there any way we can give it an Oscar for that Han Solo cameo?

I haven't seen all the movies but I loved Inglorious Basterds intensely. I own The Hurt Locker but haven't gotten around to seeing it. I would be very impressed if I preferred it over Basterds. I saw Avatar and while I really enjoyed the experience, to say it's the best movie of the year seems to be stretching it. It's a movie driven by technology and it's a really cool movie to sit through, but the fact you can lay out the entire plot without even seeing it should keep it from winning. It might not but it should.

Avatar can win all the technical catagories it wants but if it wins best picture I will be very dissapointed. As a movie it was somewhat terrible in every aspect MINUS visuals.

I'd love to see District 9 win Best Movie as it was my favorite film BY FAR this year but I know it won't and most likely wouldn't even have made the top 4 or 5 or whatever it used to be. It has way too much action and not enough handicapped people/gay people/boring parts to win. However neither does Hurt Locker and I really think it's got a good shot.

So yeah, I hope the winner is District 9 but I have a strong feeling that Avatar will undeserving win.

Sick to see Christoph Waltz nominated. He was amazing in s. Hopefully District 9 wins screenplay too

The massive plot holes in District 9 immediately disqualify it from any discussion as best picture.

Moon might be the best movie I saw this past year.

I felt both Inglorious Basterds and Up in the Air had some really amazing moments, but weren't very consistent - I'll have to watch Up in the Air again, but I thought it was a little too meandering, almost as though it lost what it was about halfway through. I might just have to watch it again. As for Inglorious Basterds, I thought the whole side plot with the girl and her movie theatre was disappointing.

That said, I would watch either of those again in a heartbeat - liked them both.

Avatar was amazing to look at, but that's about it. I didn't care for District 9. Why have such an innovative concept and stunning beginning, only to degenerate into a big smelly pile of hollywood cliches? I feel like Steven Speilberg was called in to direct the second half. Aww, look at the cute little alien kid. ET phone home? Better help those aliens, have one last stand against the humans in stomach churningly dramatic fashion. Blegh. Blegh. Blegh. I'm actually angry about that movie because I really loved the beginning of it.

IMO, The most glaring thing about the entire list of nominations, is the names of those who are up for 'Best Actress',,

Besides Streep, Bullock has virtually no competition and is a shoe-in for the Oscar and that makes me feel Ill. She's a bad actress and she always has been.

Can you give an award for a 'good' performance in a 'not so good' movie? IE: Streep (Julie & Julia).

Can you give an award for a bland, plain & foregtable performace in a 'better' movie? IE: Bullock (The Blind Side).

BTW: Bullock has also received a nomination for worst actress of the year (Razzies) for her performance in "All about Steve".

Those plot holes were put in on purpose. It was shot in a humans point of view and the humans had no idea why they were there... etc

It's part of the story...

You are not. The start was really great, and I really liked the documentary-feel they gave it at the beginning. But then the movie it just changed. I wasn't overly fond of the movie changing to just Wickus's point of view, but understood it was necessary to keep maintain the storyline of the movie, but then it deteriorated into some mindless gundam sci-fi shooter, and then the thing that really bothered me was that it didn't even have any closure! So in summary, good at start, deteriorate, deteriorate again, then no ending. Bah!

I liked Inglourious Basterds, and Up, but I doubt either of those will win for best movie. I'm not even sure if Up is nominated heh.

Edit: Oh I just saw above that Up is nominated! Hooray!

All of these nominated movies seem to have on fatal flaw. No giant fighting robot hits another giant fighting robot with a tree.

Because of this, I feel best picture must go to the only movie that had this. Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen.

/thread.

Go ahead and lock this.
