Sorry, I said Bolero, but Guacho was the one we went to. I imagine Bolero is larger, and possibly easier for kids to blend in.

shameless plug for muse in kensington. it is pricier, and it does have fine-dining calibre food, so it's worth the money. but if you want it all with a casual, non hoity-toity, atmosphere, go give it a try. i mean, if they let me serve tables there, there's nothing too uppity about it.

I was at Redwater yesterday, good date location - maybe not first date though unless she is really hot.

Also was at Bookers on the weekend - very good.

I'm surprised no one's mentioned shikiji.
Always consistant, I've never been disapointed yet.

Momoyama used to be very good. Great value, especially the lunch bento-box. Nowadays you can get much better for the price you're paying.

If you're going to Misato...you must get the Calgary Special Roll at least once. You will be at awe as to just how humongous the fricking thing is. It's around 18 bucks but just the visual shock alone is worth it.

All of Misato's rolls seem huge somehow. As a result, we always end up over-ordering and end up with stuff going to waste. Not sure you can fault them for that.

My wife and I just did the sushi making course at Kinjo and the amount of rice that goes into those big rolls is absolutely insane. There is one giant serving of rice just in one of those rolls.

We ended up going to The Broken Plate in Kensington. We got there around 5:30 on Saturday and had a great experience. The food was fantastic. The service was excellent. There were no concerns on behalf of the staff or patrons regarding our two year old daughter and 5 month old son in attendance.

Across the street is a really good Indian food place - not sure of the name but its fantastic.

Last time I was there it was quite loud; your kids wouldn't even be noticed

My kids love Greek food so it's really easy for them to focus on it.

There were a handful of other toddlers and young kids there as well. Much louder than ours (the five month old slept almost the whole time). We made a big deal out of the occasion and dressed up which really impressed our two year old daughter. She did quite well at her first "fancy" restaurant.

We went a bit before the evening rush so that it wouldn't be overly loud. That may have upset our kids and made things unbearable. Plus, we thought if they were going to be annoying it wouldn't ruin any other diners' experiences.

3 suggestions for you

1. Mykonos on Centre Street. Similar to the Broken Plate, but you get belly dancers for some entertainment. They come by and ask you to join them.

2. Tropical Cantina in Inglewood. Atmosphere is festive, food is good, tequila selection is very good. They have a jazz bar upstairs, Club Paradiso, which is good to go to for some post dinner fun.

3. La Dolce Vita in Bridgeland. Family owned Italian restaurant, a little more formal than the other two, but great for a place to take the wife.

I am going to plug El's Japanese Fusion sushi restaurant as much as possible. I really like the portion and price. Not to mention the quality of the sushi they serve, simply superb.

I also despise Globefish. At one point in time, they used to be one of the best places for sushi. The portions were reasonable and price was good...Now? HORRIBLE. A 2 person meal came to $80 and my date and I weren't anywhere close to satisfied. I gave them a chance a couple more times and both times were completely unsatisfactory. It seems Globefish believes they are now into the upscale market, and have lost their winning ways. From now on, it's El's Japanese Fusion for me.

Chef Mike told me he'll be opening a second location- it's on Edmonton Tr in Bridgeland and is the space that was (still is? I think they close next month) an adult bookstore. He'll be able to have a bigger kitchen with a bigger menu (more non-sushi items- as you know his maki menu is already ridiculously huge) and to be licenced. Look for an opening in late spring or summer 2010.
