Macs can get a little cluttered as the windows don't occupy an entire screen, but rather small portions of it. If I have a word document, my email, my browser, my photos and my itunes all open at the same time navigating to one of those could be annoying. Expose takes everything that is open and displays it in a thumbnail/grid sort of thing for easy access.
Instead of having to click through things to access one document or application among many opens ones, expose presents it like this:
In keeping with the cluttered problem, spaces allows you to set up several different desktops. It always used to bug me that I'd be working in photoshop, but my email would be open behind it, my browser to the left of that and miscellaneous crap to the right. By activating spaces you can set up a certain number of spaces (i have 9) and assign an application to it's own space. Now when i click on my email the whole screen swipes to a clean desktop with nothing else interfering. I enjoy the lack of distraction.
This is what it looks like:
Give it a whirl for 10 minutes and see what you think. Go into your system preferences --> expose and spaces and activate spaces ... give yourself 4 to start out with. Assign your browser to one, email to another, itunes to the third and calendar to the fourth (or use whatever applications you use most). I can't go back to the traditional layout anymore.
Once you start getting into it more and more you can assign expose or spaces to open with a button click on your mouse so you can rip around with reckless abandon.

Thanks for that overview Russic. Ive had a Mac for almost a year and havent used that feature much, but it seems like it would certainly help some of my frustrations when I have numerous windows open. I guess I havent come close to mastering the Mac way of doing things yet.

That's a rather expensive LCD 27" LCD TV.
Of course, it is 1440p.

There are a bunch of little features that macs have have me say "I'll never use that". A few months down the road I give it a try and it turns out it either fixes a problem I've had or it makes my workflow go a little smoother. That was the way quicksilver worked for me. I had it on my computer for 2 months, tried it once and thought "this is way too complicated". Then one day I needed to find an easy way to resize a photo. Turns out quicksilver can do that (among hundreds of other little things).

Have you looked at services in Snow Leopard yet? Those little things like resizing photos on the fly can all be found or written easily as services now. I can't remember if you were in on the conversation we had about them a while back on this forum.

I was but I still haven't managed to get into them. I'm sure there's a bunch of stuff I'd like, but I haven't been able to get there just yet. I still have some troubles with building workflows in automator. I try really hard but most things I make tend not to work.
I always get stuck in certain loops. For instance: I'd love to figure out a way that I could build a workflow to automatically back up my ical and address book. If I could do that I could put it into my ical and then have it run on a timer every 7 days (or whatever I want). I've never been able to figure it out though.

Oh snap. Just from reading the last two posts, I think I've figured out my BootCamp/Time Machine back-up conundrum...
Since Time Machine doesn't back anything up on the BootCamp partition, I've been manually copying things from my "My Documents" folder in my Windows BootCamp partition to my Documents folder in my Mac partition.
Automator to the rescue!

I hear ya...it feels like there is a high barrier to entry learning how to use automator scripts effectively, but I also think if we get past that, it could be tremendously valuable...but i'm in the same boat as you...i dabble but not many breakthroughs yet

FYI, was at the Mac store in Market Mall today and, while they didn't have any of the new gear in yet, the salesgirl did indicate that they were expecting a very large shipment to arrive today.
Now, she did say that it's possible the shipment contains nothing but printers, but it's also possible that the store will have the new hardware by this afternoon.

They hardly suck... But they are definitely not for everyone like some vendors try to get people to do. They save a ton on power and rackspace in larger environments.
