There's an interesting story about how they got their break in the business. They were busking outside a drug store in Doc Watson's home town in North Carolina when Doc's granddaughter walked by. OCMS grabbed her attention so she brought Doc back to listen to them. He was impressed so he asked them to perform at his festival (Merle Fest) and their career took off from there.

Speaking of Doc Watson, he does some pretty decent stuff himself. I wanna see him play the Columbus Stockade Blues before I die.

This is the best bjork performance

Bela fleck and the flektones, giving music-gasms to music-geeks

Bela flek + mongolian throast singer, why not?

Mars Volta, song picks up at 1:00

Primus, great video for a classic

If I ever need to feel like a pimp, this is my jam.

See, that's what came to mind when I saw the thread title as well - although I'm not sure if it's because I predate the dinosaurs, or because it was used in Fallout 3 as one of Galaxy News Radio's playlist.

And just for those old-timers who think that the language has gone downhill lately, some of the lyrics from this 30's song say:

"Good authors too who once knew better words,
Now only use four letter words
Writing prose,
Anything Goes."

Oh yah, and for the list:

Man, a lot of unlistenable tunes so far. Some good ones though.

Everyone has their own likes and dislikes. My likes usually need a good beat. I think that is what is missing most from the newer music style. Simply a beat. For the most part, I think rap is crap, but there is definitely some old school stuff that rocks (Run DMC, "It's Like That" for one.)

Other than a beat, I hope there is some good riffs/melodies and/or energy. Not many slow songs turn my crank.

Ultimately though, my favourite tunes keep me jumping. Powder Blues Band - Thirsty Ears is a great example. Fun, bluesy... yet I can also go to my old roots of metal and give you Accept - Princess of the Dawn (let alone Balls to the Wall and others).

I guess that I have a hard time initially accepting off beat style music like...ohh the Police - Roxanne. Sonically, it was like my foot needed an abacus to determine the beat.

Some of the most requested songs I get as a DJ are:

Journey - Don't Stop Believin'
Nitty Gritty Dirt Band - Cadillac Ranch
Nitty Gritty Dirt Band - Fishin' In The Dark
Def Leppard - Pour Some Sugar On Me
AC/DC - Thunderstruck
Big & Rich - Save A Horse (Ride A Cowboy)
Trooper - Raise A Little Hell
Wild Cherry - Play That Funky Music
Bob Seger - Old Time Rock And Roll
Finger Eleven - Paralyzer
The Cult - She Sells Sanctuary
Bon Jovi - Livin' On A Prayer
Poison - Your Mama Don't Dance
The Clash - Rock The Casbah
Boney M - Rasputin
Dead Or Alive - You Spin Me Round
Eddie Rabbitt - I Love A Rainy Night
Cyndy Lauper - Girls Just Want To Have Fun
Lynyrd Skynyrd - Sweet Home Alabama
B-52s - Love Shack

Again, everyone's tastes vary though. I just know that I am more old school/mainstream in nature.

I often wonder what people mean when they say a song should have a good beat. 99.9% of songs are 4/4. Accent on the 1st beat.

Having accents on a beat and having a BEAT are two different things. You know the style of music I like, and most likely what I don't by know. Don't you see a difference?

Edit, oh, and you changed your post from "accent on the 2nd and 4th counts" to "accent on the 1st beat" before I posted. Hmmm...

Still I stand by what I feel. 99.9 % as you say might have the framework, but NOT the feel in my opinion.

Billy Idol remade "To Be A Lover". On his Storytellers DVD, he talked about this track and where he found it. He was given a version of this song in 1977, a reggae version. "As you see it takes f'n forever..." Upon researching the song, he found it was from an old Stacks song from '61 or 62... which was even slower.

Perhaps I need to include "tempo" in what I consider "beat". I just always considered it all "upbeat".

Here's my current playlist, deep into a couple bourbons and so wanting something both mellow and upbeat, with a jazz and soul influence. If I was to recommend just one track from this list, it would probably be Moonland.

Hold Steady - Stuck Between Stations
Joe Henry - Your Side of My World
Suzanne Vega - Tombstone
Nick Cave - Moonland
Amon Tobin - Easy Muffin
Serge Gainsbourgh - Melody
Charles Mingus - Better Get Hit in Yo Soul
David Bowie - Days

Outlaw and classic country gives me shivers. I can sit for hours and listen to Waylon.

And if you don't have Jamey Johnson in your library, get your ass in gear.
