I thought I was doing well attempting a 20'x40' size! Alas, it was basically all the area I have that is level enough.

The only fun part of winter for me is building a rink. Last year didn't go so good, the water got under my attempt at a plastic liner, floated it and I had to go real thick, plus it was a bugger to pull apart in spring. No liner this year. The other thing was I had two big dead spots, which didn't fill in till the end of the year. Hopefully I can do this in the garden this year, as you can't kill dirt.
I would rather do it on the grass, if anyone has good suggestions how not to kill the grass.
I am going for 30x50 (acreage) and the other problem I have is the size makes even flooding tough. I like to build a base out of my cistern, but once it's even I always flood with hot water, which gives a beautiful smooth surface, and bonds to the lower layer.
I also want to try some lines this year, not sure how that will go.
Must have boards behind the net too, way to many pucks disapear!

^ My grass was fine under my rink...in fact maybe the grass was better under there? I have no idea why. I didn't do anything to make that be the case!

Obviously for a larger rink you might need to take the step of buying these fancy braces...I have no idea. Seems pricey though?

I would agree. However, I'm not much of a carpenter and am struggling with how to effectively, read easily, to make the rink board frame.

Well I'm sure that my design won't win any medals for innovation! I bought the aforementioned 2x12s. I then pieced them together with some steel brackets (about $1.50 each IIRC) on each side. I put those together with about 4-5 screws at each joint. Then the corners I just screwed together with 4" screws. Made this giant box, staked it and lined it with plastic.
Its far from an engineering feat! Its just really simple and worked well for me last year. To make it fancier I put some rope lights and christmas lights along the edges and then a few spotlights around it. Voila!
I can try to take a few pics if you think that would help? Honestly I did this the easiest way I could think of though...

^^, if you dont mind with some pictures, I would certainly appreciate it. Your concept seems very doable.

OK, its going to take until either tonight or this afternoon at the earliest (work getting in the way!).
I'll just take the first shot before I even post though "Slava, stick to stocks and bonds...the proper way to do that is use an ABC connector. You should also be using the DEFG brackets at the corners and your sealing job on the poly looks ridiculous. Clearly you're an amateur!"
So, like I say its not likely the recommended way or anything like that. I made it up myself and it worked for me...

Finally got the water running into mine but it looks like my seals didnt really hold so the water is escaping underneith the plastic onto the grass.. Im think i might try and freeze over the seals tonight and then tomorrow be able to just let the hose run.
Right now ive got the sprinkler on it trying to weigh down some of the snow and turn it into ice but the sprinkler keeps freezing into one position...
Trial and error FTL.

Tried unfreezing the tap on saturday... was way too cold to even do that.
I'm going to wait until thursday/saturday to do it again. Tap shouldnt take an hour to unfreeze and it will still be cold enough to freeze overnight.
If i had a full rink already i could be skating today... nuts how cold its been lately.

OK, this is the bracket that I was talking about earlier. I'd say the rest of the rink isn't quite photo-ready yet! Its pretty rough ice, but hopefully in the next day or two after some more water it will be ready to show.
I see a few guys who are considering doing this and if you have kids I highly recommend it! Honestly my rink is nothing to write home about....but last year on Christmas morning we went for a skate out there and that is a great memory and dare I say tradition?! We really enjoyed it and I would definitely say that its worth the effort!

And just like that I've become that guy I hate who posts an enormous picture. I'll try to shrink that bad boy down to something reasonable.....apologies.
I clearly suck at posting photos. I now have this down to this size and am leaving it there.....I think that you can see what I mean and hope so.
Seriously we're not talking rocket science here. Just put thin layers of water down and it freezes....eventually you have an ice rink!

Not exactly. It was "Who are you going to please with that little thing?" to which I quickly answered "me"!
And like I also say: I'll try to make it bigger....
