Not to derail this thread, but Bill Clinton is not of average intellect. he is by all accounts very intelligent, heck he graduated from Yale, the most prestigious and hard to get into law school in the united states.

Clinton was an Oxford Rhodes scholar.
Also, don't confuse intellect with knowledge. Palin might be 'smarter' than she appears to be, but she obviously has little to no knowledge or had any prior interest in the relevant and neccessary knowledge for the job. If somebody sounds like they obviously doesn't know what they are talking about when they speak, I'm not going to trust them to make decisions for me.
Reagan was an actor and damn good at judging the mood of the American people and was a powerful orator with strong rhetoric and strong well-thought out answers and a quick wit that did what a leader needed to do - make it seem like the American people could trust him to make the right choices. Palin exudes zero confidence. She's rambling like a brainless beauty pagent queen given a simple question about the economy.

Not even close to what she has brought to the table. That interview with Katie Couric shows how big of a tool she is.
Which newspapers do you follow to keep in touch with the world? All of them! hahahahahaha. All politcians lie. At least make it believable so kids in elementary believe you.

What happened to taking responsibilities for ones own actions? For sure the McCain camp made a mistake, but so did Palin.

Being a VP candidate was never that hard but with today's media, everythng gets scrutinized and she kept digging her own grave. The republicans were behind, she was their savoir and it all blew up.

More reason to carefully think twice before accepting the position.

I would have done it Opportunity knocks.
She was a nobody in Alaska. She's become a star! Maybe not a political one now but she well-known and can do anything she wants.

That start will fade fast. Book deals don't last forever and neither do speaking engagements.

Hehehe I would think that if I were the governor of a state I'd have thick skin. She used her family as pawns so they're treated as pawns, major mistake.
The start will fade but she'll milk it for every penny. One book deal can make millions!

That's why I thought she was never that smart. Thankfully the American people saw her for what she really is.

I have no doubt she's a user and an opportunist. Just like she did in Alaska politics, she'll toss aside people when she's done with them.

If she was actually interested in making a significant difference and learn about the national issues without the burden of being one heartbeat away from the presidency, she was far better off running for the Senate or even the House of Representatives than for VP. If she cared enough about her country she would have said "No, I am not ready to be VP yet" to McCain. By running for Congress instead she would have certainly been able to parlay her popularity in Alaska (a very solidly Republican state) into a substantial role with a national platform. Instead she opted for the glamourous choice to go into the national spotlight and was (and still is) completely out of her league and caught off guard by all of the attention. What did she think was going to happen?
I don't buy the fact that she wasn't properly briefed for the interviews. If someone is of Vice Presidential calibre, they only need to be really briefed on recent events that are not particularly well covered by the media but are still important enough to comment on. The Bush Doctrine represented a fundamental shift in US policy and occurred 6 years before the interview. Handlers aren't there to teach the basics. They are there to reinforce the details.

So are you saying George W is of average intellect or not? My only contention was that Clinton is much smarter than you apparently gave him credit for earlier in this thread.

Clinton was and is a really smart, really intelligent guy, I don't think that's an arguable point. He's just a sociopath.

So from her own words, would it be a fair statement if i said she formed her opinions of the world from Playboy, Teen Beat and Mad magazine. she did read them all did she not?

I would hazard a guess she quit due to the continuous attacks and harassment against herself and her family.
As for other GOP candidates. I am sure there will be plenty after the single most massive debt spending in the history of the world has finally run it's course.
But if he goes down at least we have Joe 'Snapping Defeat from the Jaws of Victory in Iraq' Biden to take over.

Continuous attacks? Harassment? She puts herself out there like a celebrity, she should expect to be treated like one. Run your life like you're a paparazzi target and of course you will be scrutinized, especially when your family life is full of things that run counter to the stances often taken by your party.
You don't get it both ways. She can't beckon the press when it's convenient for her to get attention and then call harassment when the coverage is negative.

She quit because she wants to be President.
She has nothing to gain from remaining Governor of a state that's:
A. In sudden financial trouble due to low oil prices
B. Far, far away from Iowa, New Hampshire, and every other primary state
C. In her mind, thought of as backwards and a hick state, when really it was just her we thought of that way
As far as the newspapers she reads thing, she really thought it was a trick question trying to discover if they've discovered the printing press in Alaska. Also, I suspect the honest answer would have been hilarious, but she should have been smart enough to recite a few obvious things. (Time, Newsweek, NYT, Washington Post, Wasilla Daily or whatever)
I bet she runs in 2012, and I give her a greater than 50% chance of getting the Republican nomination. Which gives the Republicans a less than 1% chance of winning the general election. Oh Darn.

If her goal is to become president this is a rather odd way of accomplishing it. The biggest knock against her is the lack of experience, dropping out of active politics isn't going to help with that. Sure she'll get to spend more time in some of the key states, but she'll only be speaking to people who are already voting for her. Unless she can use this time to get the rest of the party behind her I don't see the benefit.
My theory is that she's getting out before some sort of scandal breaks. It's a bit suspicious that the announcement came down the day before a 3 day weekend, it lets the whole thing pass much further under the radar than usual.

If there isn't a scandal about to come to light I'd say she is leaving because the relentless heat she has had to endure. She's broke because she has had to defend herself from multiple attempts to find fault against her in court proceedings. In Alaska the Governor doesn't get taxpayer funded legal council for protection against lawsuits. Her enemies have used this to cause her hardship and financual loss while running her and her family's name through the mud. The lawsuit typically gets a lot of attention until she is cleared. No attention or scrutiny is given to the failed accuser.
Sarah Palin's family also never stopped being open game. Most politicians can parade their family out for the photo op and maybe give some kind reporter an interview for feel good story. Beyond that the family is off limits. Obama even tried to make himself look all tough by forcefully saying his wife and family were off limits when some of the stuff his wife was saying was questioned. He said this even though the things she said were while she was stumping for him. Sarah Palin was given no relief even after the election was over.
Sarah Palin leaves office with still over 50% support in the State she governed. Lets see Obama match that.
