It was unfortunate that the Cannon's baseball team left Calgary, but then again you guys diddnt have great teams like we had with the Edmonton Trappers. We got to see many great MLB'ers over the years in Tim Salmon, Jason Giambi, Eric Chavez, Johan Santana, Kyle Lohse, and many others. Hopefully both cities can enjoy a good rivalry in the Northern League.

Well, Randy Johnson, Edgar Martinez, Tino Martinez, Jay Buhner, Brett Boone, Omar Vizquel, Danny Tartabull and Harold Renyolds aren't that shabby either.

It takes 0 seconds to not post. Think of the valuable time you're saving if it takes 30 seconds to post, times 160 posts, that's an hour and 20 minutes of time you could be doing other things.
Speaking the truth? Again, all you're doing is coming up with belittling comments without making any sort of constructive contributions. Defending your city? It's one thing to make a rebuttle to a certain point, it's another to derail several decent discussions. You're demanding credit be given to Edmonton, yet aren't doing the same for Calgary. Please just do us all a favour and not respond unless you have something constructive to contribute, instead of spewing anti-Calgary sentiment the entire time...it's getting really, really tiresome.
Back on topic - the cheapest tickets for the all star game is 40+charges. Seems really expensive (and like Jiri said, it's tough enough knowing the players for the Roughnecks, let alone all the other teams). I'm betting that might be the cause of the slow ticket sales. My bet is that as the event draws closer, the prices may fall to a decent, more reasonable level - that's when I'd buy.

On a side note, the Roughnecks game on friday had another 10,000 plus crowd. I suspect as the season moves along, and when the Rock come to town, attendance will be even higher. I would love to see Calgary host a playoff game again, and maybe even the Championship game.
I have to say in terms of all this "bush league" stuff I have to make one point. I have attended at least one game every year since they came to town as well as the Champions cup final. I must say that the final game was of high professional quality. I was VERY impressed with the whole package. Huge crowd of 19,000 only enhanced a well planned game. There were no shortges of fireworks, very good intro and entrance set up, even had a real buffalo running around. The atmosphere was great and set up was nothing short of top notch. I have been to other events that just don't feel to first class, but that game was definetly of high quality.

my point being that our teams were good enough to win 3 PCL championships in 6-7 years. And that even with 2 organizations.

Well, it is no secret that Edmonton has been desperately trying to land a WHL team, looking with envy at what the Flames have built with the Hitmen.
|
SO, can you enlighten us why we would look with envy towards your WHL team? I think youre full of it. If this is true, then it would be logical to assume that you look with envy at our AHL team. After all, you keep up witht he box scores and attendance, do you not?
There are only 8 home games a year with the NLL?
|
It would be logical to assume we would be looking with envy at your second team if we didnt have one of our own.
Since the Edmonton school system isnt that great, notice that I never mentioned Edmontonians or Oiler fans, just the Oilers organization itself.
I never phrased the comment as an "AHL is better than WHL" question, but of the financial value of having a second team.
You really need to get over your Edmonton inferiority complex.
The Flames have been making a lot of money off of the Hitmen for years now, and the Oilers noticed this. From a buisness perspective, the Oilers owners would be looking at the millions the Flames owners have made, and want to have the same thing. That's why the Oilers basically made an open offer for *any* WHL team at a price higher than what most are currently worth.
Looking at the Calgary model, and at the fact that both Vancouver and Ottawa are supporting junior hockey very well, it is a good buisness investment for the Oilers.
The AHL is less so, because of the significantly increased costs, but it could still be a good deal for the Oilers. I believe the Oilers realize this, as they only brought the Roadrunners to Edmonton after nobody in the WHL took their offer, and after Ricoh terminated their lease with the owners of the Roadrunners.
For this year, and probably next, that was also a good buisness decision, as Rexall would otherwise sit empty. Long term, I believe the Oilers would rather have a WHL team. Purely a buisness decision.

4 billion people watched that amueture event. How many people outside of Calgary give a sh*t about the olympics? No Body!
I know you in-bred Calgarians have a tough time getting that through your head, but your olympics dont mean sh*t.

honest question, not trying to deflect anything: it seems that the PCL championships being quoted is the result of what the big league team does w/ respect to drafting, sending players down, etc, nothing to really do with what happened in Edmonton/Calgary. Is that a fair statement?
Really, good for you guys w/ the PCL championships...it definately would have been nice if Calgary won some back then...but unfortunately didn't happen.

Too many valid topics are getting ruined by the constant p*ssing match between Calgary and Edmonton. Do we need a seperate board for those useless conversations?
|
Well, the Edmonton inferiority complex is pushing these people to whine about things.
Personally, I suspect that they really are jealous of our successful NLL team, but cant bring themselves to admit it to a Calgarian.
When Edmonton gets their team - and they will - these very same jealous Edmontonians will be all over this forum the first time the Edmonton Mulletheads defeat the Roughnecks bragging.
It's simply their nature.

I wonder if you can prove that 4 billion people watched your track meet.

4 Billion? So basically almost everyone on this planet was watching that event?? What is the current estimation of planet earth...5-6 Billion. That's pretty good then. The majority of this planet watching the games. I can see all the little African children and there parents watching in there grass hut. I can envision all the Middle East countries take a break from fighting to gather round the ol TV and check out some long jump. I can also envision all those empty seats at Commonwealth stadium, those orange seats sure stand out when not filled...I think things are taken a little out of context. I'm sure the IAAF have the potential to be witnessed by 4 Billion, but not a chance that 4 Billion tuned in. If that's the case then they must be counting viewers who tune in more then once. If I watched all 10 days I would be counted as 10 people. No way in hell 4 Billion different people tuned in.

perhaps thats what is meant. But the one thing that fat IAAF guy said, when he came here was that only the World Cup and Summer Olympics are watched more. Face it, the winter olympics r a joke

Do you really believe that or are you just trying to stir up trouble?
Who won the gold medal in men's hockey in the last Olympics? Now, who won the women's marathon at the IAAF?
If you can answer the second question and not the first then I will agree that maybe nobody outside of Calgary cares about the winter olympics. If you can answer the first question and not the second then I'll have to conclude that at least you care about the winter olympics, and that's one.
