Just my opnion, but I think a lot of people under rate Jack White. He plays with a lot of soul. People are so used to clear and crisp digitally re-mastered sterile guitar, they forget what raw rock'n'roll guitar sounds like. Check out The Dead Weather if you haven't already.

While I firmly agree with your main point - I have to point out that JW plays drums for The Dead Weather.

Jack White with his barely-talented bandmate Meg, can rock a stadium as much as all the greats. Him and his guitar become one - like all the greats.

Jack White is underrated for sure. He's got some great licks and to hold a band and concert together with just his guitar and drums takes talent.

The Edge is the weakest of the three. There's nothing that really stands out about him as a guitar player. Alot of effects, reverb and pretty normal guitar playing.

Jimmy Page is on another planet. I haven't seen the movie but only think this would be okay. 1-up to the poster who said that it was too white and too monocultured. Would have loved to see three guitar players with different backgrounds and styles get together.

I think anyone who's ever seen the White Stripes live would not question his status as a guitar hero, seeing the song Icky Thump live was worth the price of admission alone- I think Jack White and Josh Homme are two of the best going right now-So much creativity they both have multiple bands (all great-check out The Dead Weather and Them Crooked Vultures for references) play numerous instruments and their throwaway music is much better than most other bands can write period.

Jack White is a fine guitarist, songwriter and performer, no one is saying he isn't. Just not in the same leauge as the other two, that's all. To tell the truth I was very underwhelmed by what he played live in the film, prefer his recorded material.

As for the whitebread comment, might have to agree. Slash or Tom Morello would have evened that out and been far more down to earth,

Anyways, The Uptown has extended the film for another week.

You had to know this thread would digress into '<insert guitarist here> is better than all three of these guys even though that's not what the movie is trying to say. I don't know how to play the guitar but growing up I loved listening to Joe Satriani and Steve Vai - I thought they were the greatest ever. Then one day I went into axe music on Blackfoot and saw just some everyday dude playing some of Satch's stuff.

It was that day that I wondered if technically speaking are any of the icons any better than some session guitarist or dude in a cover band who pumps gas during the day? Maybe the difference lies in having the creativity to compose a riff that people will remember and get the lucky breaks to be paired with someone who can write good songs.

Or... in Jack White's case... be someone who can do both.

Its not too say that people can't play the same stuff or at the same speed as someone like Vaughn or Hendrix or Page etc... But the difference is they created these sounds. Yeah I can sit down and jam some Little Wing or w/e, but that doesn't make me even close to the creative talent as these guys. It's a lot harder to make up a beautiful piece of music than it is to copy someone else.

Tom Morello has been mentioned twice in this thread so far... Do people really consider him a great guitarist? I enjoy playing Rage and Audioslave stuff because I find it fun and easy - other than his solos, which are heavily effects based, what is it causing people to elevate his stature? He's not groundbreaking musically, I don't think.

I'm not a big fan of guitarists who rely on effects...
I think, contrary to most people here, that Jack Black is overrated...
And the more I learn about Led Zepplin the more I wish I never knew.

For sure tho this is gonna be a hit for the masses. Just not for me.

Does that include a tube amplifier driven beyond its intended/designed operating levels? 'Cause if so, that excludes this whole rock'n'roll fad

Effects just must be used tastefully. Morello crosses that line from time to time, but he's an innovator for sure. Music is the language of emotion, so I think a great guitarist is mainly about invoking an emotional response in the listener, not how many notes/second you can play. If an effect helps you do that then use it. For myself I use phaser and delay, and try to limit the use of each effect to twice in a set or so (running through a Mesa Mark IV stack with 3 channels). If you use effects too much, they lose their effect.

Perhaps you're learning about them from the wrong sources? Greatest band of all time hands down IMO.

Jack Black is def. not overrated, Jack White on the other hand.........I've stated my opinions on him and I'm clearly in the minority on here. If he gets people excited about the guitar then more power to him!

I should add that though I enjoyed the movie, most of the jams were pretty weak given the participants.

Ha! Jack Black... yeah I mean Jack White. I agree with you.... if people like him, fine, but I have heard him do nothing that to me warrants the term 'virtuoso' like I have have seen tossed around this thread. Funny how commercial success changes people's veiws on what constitutes musical ability.

I love Led Zep, and I think many people would agree that much in music is 'borrowed' from someone else, or influenced by someone else. I just try to ignore many of their obvious plagarisms.

And I think U2 is terrible. But thats just my opinion and lots would disagree with me on that.

I think it's important to realize that the goal of this film was never to find the three greatest guitarists who ever lived.

I'm not so sure that anybody would want to pay 15 bucks to watch three guys they've never heard of talk about songs they've never listened to.

The three of these guys more or less sound the same anyway and despite their differences, dabble in the same roots. Classic rock, chords, folk, etc. I wish they would have had some variety. Add some funk guitar, some soul, some laid back riffs.

Something like this (the 2nd part).

I don't know about the other two, but Page was influenced by the Blues and Classical Music.

Page's roots certainly aren't classic rock...Led Zeppelin helped create classic rock. Although he did play with several major classic rock groups as a session player (Prior to Led Zeppelin and The Yardbirds) - The Who, The Kinks, The Rolling Stones, etc.

It's impossible to say who the #1 guitarist of all time is. Everybody has a different opinion, and that's OK...that's what makes it fun.

In no particular order...some legends that must be considered:
  • Eric Clapton

  • Jimmy Page

  • Hendrix

  • BB King

  • Duane Allman

  • Chuckberry

  • Keith Richards

  • Robert Johnson

  • Stevie Ray

  • Van Halen

John Petrucci (Dream Theater) deserves consideration as well...amazing guitarist.

I'm out of control here, I keep thinking of guitarists....check out Maneli Jamal, he gets such a uniquely beautiful sound out of his guitar. He's Canadian as well!

All that said....time to go make my pick in the guitar tab draft!
