This one other time when Gretzky was still a Ranger, I walked into a Jersey City in Edmonton, I saw an Oilers Gretzky jersey and pretended to be so surprised. This was the conversation
Me: What!?!?!? Gretzky played for the Oilers?
Sales lady: Ummmm, yeah, you didn't know that?
Me: No, when did he play for the Oilers
SL: His best years were in Edmonton
Me: I know he plays for the Rangers now and he used to play for the Blues, but I had no idea he was a former Oiler
SL: You've got to be kidding me!
Me: Nope
SL: Where did you grow up?
Me: Right here in Edmonton
SL: And you didnt' know he played for the Oilers?
Me: Nope. Are you sure?
SL: YES!!! Come here, I will show you some old pictures
Me: Okay
Sales lady escorts me to some old pictures of Gretzky as an Oiler
Me: I can't believe it. I grew up in the 80's in Edmonton and had no idea he was an Oiler!
SL: I don't know how you didn't know. He was the most famous person to ever be associated with Edmonton
Me: I was a HUGE Oilers fan when I was a kid too
SL: Are you serious?
Me: Yes!
SL: He played for Edmonton for 10 years before being traded to LA
Me: What?!?!?! He played for the Kings as well?????
SL: Are you sure you're a hockey fan?
Me: Yes! A huge fan as a matter of fact
We continuted to have a long conversation about the NHL, and I threw stats players, playoff series etc, that only a true hardcore fan would know. She was so surprised that I knew so much about hockey but did not know Gretzky played for the Kings and Oilers.
My friends had to leave the store as they were laughing so hard. I managed to keep a stright face. That was one of the best little pranks I did in a looooong time
