She just ate her first meal at my place. And she is sleeping more.
I tried to get her collar on her, and her leash, but she hated it so I left the collar on and she scratched at it a bit, but now seems like she is getting used to it. Still hates the leash. Small puppy steps, I guess.

This is Sadie. I took this a couple of months ago, but she's basically still the same size. She's soooo cute!

I don't want to sound like a fag or nothing but that is a really adorable kitten.

Holy crap ... some cute dogs in here. We recently (as in last night) began working with a dog trainer. I'm new to the dog world and our dog is medium/large in size, so I devoured all the info I could get into. For the most part it was really good and I would recommend it. However, we batted the idea of hiring a trainer for far too long. Our dog isn't overly bad ... he's quite nice actually. There were some things that were just irksome though and I found them to frustrate me more and more each day. Eventually we realized that obviously there was confusion in the ranks and for our own peace of mind we called up a trainer.
After only an initial meeting of the trainer and our first session last night I can say already that I'm a little pissed we waited this long. I tried to count all the things I've been doing wrong, but as you are probably aware the human mind has trouble holding more than 7-9 things in memory at one time. Not that I was unhappy with him, but the last two weeks I've grown quite a bit closer to the dog and don't view him in the same way. I've changed my correction strategy and it's been a god send.
Harry says hello:

Lots of great advice already available here...but here are some thoughts.
You're going to need lots of chew toys...LOTS.
Puppies see the world by smelling things...they experience the world by putting whatever it is they are smelling in their mouth.
Rotate the chew toys and remember that if a puppy is chewing something he/she shouldn't...that you should be deterring him/her from doing it. Dogs for one reason or another, seem to hate citronella (the spray that you get when you peel a citrus fruit)...when my dogs were young and wanted to chew on my fingers, I covered my fingers in the stuff and they just sneezed alot when they tried to lick my fingers.
For toilet training...crane training is the best way to go; if you want your puppy to go on a specific place (ie. newspaper) you can try spraying a little bit of ammonia on it...works like a charm (for my dogs anyways).
Puppydom is a critical moment in a dog's life because that's when good/bad habits develop. Reinforce good behaviour with lots of praise, and the occasional treat. =)
When they're being bad...don't be afraid to deliver some discipline...my vet has always taught me to scruff my dogs when they're bad...they instantly submit the second I even reach for their scruff.
Scruff and muzzle...they really hate it, and will scream bloody murder the first few times you do it. But they'll get the point. =)
Not sure if my methods are going to work for you, but the board has given you lots of solid advice...so best of luck with the puppy!

Barley and Bella say "Hi!"
One is from ARF and one is from Cochrane Humane Society. They are generally really awesome dogs, but I do need advice... they are TERRIBLE on their leashes. They pull so much... to the point that I can't barely even walk them because it hurts my hands and arms. Also I admit I just get so frustrated because the non-stop pulling makes walking them completely un-enjoyable.
We've tried using treats/rewards with minimal success. Anyone have any "loose leash" tips??

I thought I had this problem licked when I bought a "gentle leader" head harness. Dog stopped pulling and I could comfortably walk him with only one hand on the leash. It goes around his muzzle and controls his head beautifully. However ...
When our dog trainer came over he commented on it. He classified it as a control tool and not a teaching tool. To prove his point he asked me if Harry was better or worse on the leash since I introduced it. I said better. He asked me to prove it by putting a standard leash on him and walk him down the block. I'll be damned if that dog didn't nearly rip my arm right off my body. Now without the gentle leader he's twice as bad as he was before, so that begs the question ... what to do when the gentle leader isn't around?
I'd share strategies but as I said in my previous post, we've only just begun. Yes I said that on purpose in the hopes of getting a very annoying song in your head.

Wicked dogs. I'm especially taken by the one on the left.
As for pulling on the leash, the thing I loved about Moxie was that because of her size, I could use a choke chain and really give it a pull if she pissed me off by pulling too hard. But I am suspicious about whether my "dog training" techniques were universally successful, or if Moxie was just one in a million. That dog would do absolutely anything I said, as long as I lowered my voice and scowled while commanding it. I think that's the thing about Rottis, they're just so obsessed with pleasing their master and always being around them. Their list of priorities are
1. Where's 4x4?
2. Where's 4x4?
3. Does he have food?
4. Where's 4x4?
5. I really need to take a nap, but 4x4 is up and at 'em, and I think there's a slight possibility that he'll leave - without me - therefore, I must stay awake to make sure he doesn't leave.
6. Can't do it anymore, must sleep now.
7. Can we please go for a walk? C'mon, man!
Of course, I'm exaggerating a bit, but honestly, those dogs are simply obsessed with where their masters are at all times. Not in a clingy, seperation anxiety sort of way. Just a genuine kind of "my life revolves around you. As long as you're happy, I'm happy" kinda thing. It's so great.
Oh look. Now I've embarrassed her:

Well, I'm interested to hear how it works out with the trainer. Maybe after only one "session" it's too early to recommend him? But I would not be opposed to trying a trainer with our dogs. We did obedience classes with both, which helped for general stuff - sit, stay, name recall, etc. The leash thing is still a fairly major issue for us though.
