Honestly, this is just a factor of living in an urban environment with over 1 million people.
If it's irritating, you could always go live in the country.
While it's pretty disrespectful to go into a residential neighbourhood after 11PM and crank your system, I've rarely experienced or observed that anyways.

No it was actually Bad.
But, i don't usually leave it blasting either, cuz i also don't like the fact that i can't hear possible emergency vehicles. so, i'll blast a song and then turn it back down, and i also have to be in the mood for blasting music. Most of the time i just like it somewhat loud.

I've been known to blast some Children Of Bodom, Lamb Of God, Slayer, or Metallica (minus anything from St. Anger) from my car. Only during the day, though, and never at night. Hey, if it's metal, it's gotta be cranked.
I guess for the most part I listen to my music loud, but I don't think I'm any competition to those cars that have those big, booming sound systems in their car.

I find it inconsiderate, but it isn't something that actively bothers me. Personally I find the exhausts that make the car sound like a goal horn far more annoying. On the upside it acts as a ######bag alarm.
All boys grow up, and one day the ones that actually pay money to look like losers will in time realize the error in their ways ... or the music will be so loud and a train will t-bone them. Either way the universe tends to right itself.

I don't mind the noise if a car is next to me at a light or drives by my house at night. The worry I have is that the kids in the car are wrecking their hearing.
Many of these kids are not mature enough to realize that losing your hearing is a bad thing down the road. Is looking cool worth the risk?

Here's the MAJOR reason why I don't blast my music or let other people blast music in my car. I know when my roommate drives, he likes to blast his music, if I'm in the car with him, I tell him to either turn it down or I'm turning it off...

TBQH I couldn't care less but I consider it to be rude and kind of stupid to do it in residential... I always turn mine down before entering my neighborhood. But on my way home I have my tunes cranked But I like heavy rock and alternative stuff, so the bass is not really crazy. I often turn my stereo down at lights but not because I care if people think its loud (its traffic so get over it) but I like to hear what other people have blasting with there windows down, sometimes I laugh so hard at people, you'll see like bad ass muscle shirt guy cranking the gay-est crap music, so funny. Oh and country and western "music"... people that play that crap loudly amaze me (and need to be donkey punched in the face) I mean seriously, the only genre so bad it has to become more and more like rock to survive and have hits but to play it loudly, like your proud of your horrible taste and tone deafness... well its makes it easy to see who the ######s in the crowd are.

Our old neighbours had a friend who used to drive up at all hours with his stupid bass cranked. One Friday evening, he was nice enough to drive up no less than 7 times between 11pm and 3 am, the walls in my house vibrating as he pulled up. The last time he arrived, I offered to show him what I thought of his awesome music should he continue with the practice. He was more considerate in the future.
Needless to say, we were all quite disappointed when these neighbours moved last year.

There is an inverse relationship between the volume and quality of the music.
Do the rest of us really need to hear your new Kid Rock record?

I don't mind it unless it's at night. But then again, I don't live in Calgary anymore and actually welcome a bit of noise, people and activity in my neighborhood. It's always noisy where I live, and you just get used to it.
Personally, I play my music pretty loud, but don't have any subs in my car to pound the bass. Just a decent system and loud enough for my own enjoyment.

I have a nice stereo in my car but I don't listen to hip-hop, rap or techno. I just like it when music sounds really good at louder volumes. I turn it down when I get into residential areas. I religiously tighten everything that might rattle. The song that I have found that sound the absolute best on my system is Scorpions 'No One Like You' and I am guilty of playing this song really loud with my windows down. I have also been know to turn it way up for Black Sabbath 'Heaven and Hell' and Maiden 'Fear of the Dark'.

I think it has more to do with them wanting to advertise themselves. They wan't people to notice them and think they are a party on wheels. It's also a status symbol among urban hip-hop culture to have absurdly loud stereos.

What about people who are audiophiles, have a system that could kick the crap out of 90% of what is out there, and choose to listen to mostly orchestra music and jazz? When Mahler Symphony #2 - Movement 5 hits with the huge contra-bass/cello run into an explosion of sound, are you seriously going to assume I'm some kind of gino? Cause a low-tone from an orchestra and a low tone from a synthesizer sound pretty much identical 'from the outside of the car'. Moreover, should they be beat down too for choosing to throw in some rock, funk, electronica, or metal?
Music is music, and some people enjoy it in super-high fidelity. As in, how the sounds come out of the speaker is as fundamentally important to the listening experience as the sound itself.
I love when people who have never listened to any kind of good recordings on any kind of good system argue about the merits of audiophilia.
Also, a lot of people in this thread have made comments like "how can you hear any of the other sounds over the bass?"
Please don't be so thick as to think that it sounds the same on the inside of the car as it does on the outside.

I love listening to loud music in the car. I know it's not great for my hearing but when I hear songs I like the volume just slowly creeps louder and louder - I can't help it, especially if I'm by myself.
I have a decent stereo but no subs or anything so I'm assuming it doesn't bother people most the time. In fact, I'm usually singing along to something, so people outside the car should just be thankful the music is loud enough to drown me out.
I used to live on a really busy street. People do drive around with their subs blasting in the middle of the night, and it's annoying. But the hugely loud motorcycles used to bother me more - we could usually hear them from further away so it was noiser for longer.

This is a classic CP post. If you don't agree with it that means the person is insecure.
People have different tastes and not everyone does something to impress others. I crank my music and honestly if there was a way I could have it go BOOM BOOM BOOM without a single soul except myself and those in my car to feel or hear it I would do it up, but it is not possible at those volumes.

I've never heard or seen a single person cranking classical music at obnoxious volumes while they drive down the street.
Maybe the odd person does it (apparently you do) and I lead a sheltered life and haven't seen it, but 99% of the cars that I can hear pounding along from half a mile away are playing 50Cent-style bad rap. The drivers are invariably young men or teenagers and wouldn't know Mahler from Mayonnaise.
