I'm not a biologist, or a psychologist. As such I have no idea if homosexuality is caused by genetics, or upbringing. It's not a choice though.

This whole religion vs. state thing is always a touchy subject. I maintain a simple stance of "Let them do what they want. Let the church uphold their own rules."
The church has their rules, and everybody is well aware of them. If you're a member of a church looking down on gay marriage that doesn't happen within a church, then you're being closed minded.

Likewise, if you're rushing into a church, and telling them they can't say "no" to a gay couple who wants to get married within the church, then you're just provoking the church for the sake of provoking it. Think of how stubborn and set in our ways Flames fans are, refusing to cheer for the Oilers in the playoffs, and that's just hockey. Growing up in a Catholic family (and absolving myself of any religious affiliation after growing up), they feel very strongly about this issue, and they should be allowed to not have this go on within their walls.

I've seen both sides be ridiculous about it. A gay member on a car forum used to start threads just to stir the pot on "yet another ridiculous thing the Catholics are doing" knowing well that many members of that particular forum happened to be of that faith. Then I know people personally who stick their noses into stuff that's going on that doesn't affect them in any way!

As far as the word "marriage" being the defining factor in this...I'm sure there was much wailing and gnashing of teeth when the word "Holiday" was used to describe any time we get a paid day off work, or when the word "Christmas" was used to describe putting up a tree, decorating it, having Santa over, distributing presents, and spending time with your family. Words change. The general public may forget the origin over generations, but I don't believe that the average atheist might turn out Christian if we force the world to accept the word "Christmas" only as what it originally was. That will contribute 0 to any decline in religious participation. Intolerance might contribute to that though.

Interesting though that Athiest groups work to get rid of the word Christmas and refer to things such as winter festivals.

Really? That's terrible.

Can you tell us the name of some of these atheist groups that are doing this?

Or maybe you can supply us with an address so we can write a letter asking them to stop.
