The cost for the city is not the reason, if anyone said it, it was an error. The water in your tap here is good, or you can filter it yourself. To have it flown out is terrible.

It's definitely sound logic to not use energy to move something to a place where it already exists. Maybe the city should set up a factory and bottle our own water. I'll still buy it.

I support this ban. I don't live in Calgary, but I see those stupid bottles blowing around in the wind all over Lethbridge here........its a big waste.
Drink tap water people, its not going to kill you. Hell you should see the water I grew up with, you had to chew it and your bath tub would look like you filled it with apple juice....

I think people are missing the point.
First of all, the debate of whether or not the ban is within city buildings or extends to all of Calgary is pointless. Looking at the social trends this city seems to follow, it is only a matter of time before bottled water is banned throughout Calgary
Second, and most important, who cares what Calgary tap water tastes like? If I want to buy bottled water, isn't that within my rights as a free citizen in a free country?
Are people who buy bottled water suckers? yes, but there's a sucker born every minute, so if they can sell it, they will. That's our free market.

Why is someone a sucker for buying bottled water? The alternatives include:
-bringing a cooler with you
-freezing your bottle of water overnight to keep it cold throughout the day
-driving to a municipal building to drink out of a fountain
-sticking your face in a creek
-drinking pop or juice
I don't get why it's so evil to prefer water. Cold water. Upon demand. At Sev. I guess I'm a sucker.

Damn true. We don't even get coffee in meetings anymore, that was cut as well. It's tap water or zilch, and anything else is a personal luxury.
It's the little things like this the City has to do to cut costs, and frankly, it's a good idea to avoid redundant spending.

I don't think it's necessarily evil, but it is rather foolish to buy water that has to be shipped from across the world. Not sure what brands are available these days, but if you have to buy bottle water (and we all do sometimes) at least try to buy water that is sourced as locally as possible. No Fiji or Evian please.

Or a better question is that how is someone so stupid still alive? Natural selection should have kicked in by now and he should have been hit by a bus or something crossing the street...

Whoa, buddy.
Gee, it's easy and fashionable to hammer politicians when they can't really defend themselves from this kind of shot from some anonymous know-it-all poster. Granted, we sometimes deserve it. I say “we” because I'm an alderman in a city in Alberta (not Calgary).
I agree with what Ceci is doing and have done something similar in my own community, although my tactic was a bit different.
As I understand it, he's not pushing for a city-wide ban, just banning bottled water in city facilities. Good for him, although I got voluntary partial compliance (we're not finished yet) in my municipality.
I cringe when I see a young couple buying a case of bottled water, knowing that they probably can't afford to waste money but they probably have credit card debt. The stuff that flows from the tap is virtually free and as good or better than a lot of that bottled stuff.
Joe (who I've met and I believe is well intentioned) is correct; we are fortunate to have some of the best tap water in the world. It’s clean and it’s safe. What is bottled water - around $1.50-$2 a bottle? Why? A third or more of bottled water is actually tap water anyway that has something added or is run through some filter, then it's bottled and sold for horrible prices.
I say good for you, Joe. Keep it up. I guess that makes me an idiot also.
Not the point, I realize. Here is the point.
Every time a politician does something you disagree with, he/she is an idiot? Your politicians are not the idiots you think they are. Do you think it's easy balancing all of the opposing viewpoints and trying to vote your conscience? It's damn hard.
I have a problem with know-it-alls who think that anyone who disagrees with them is a bumbling fool who deserves to die. Wow! I’d like to see some of you give this job a shot. Put your ego and rep on the line and file papers. We have civic elections in 1.5 years. Go out and start making a name for yourself; knock on thousands of doors and let us know how that works for you. In fact, let me know and I’ll call Ceci and he may even eliver nomination papers right to your door. It’s easy for some anonymous forum poster to take cheap shots at people in public office. Lay it on the line.
Sorry for coming off strong.
