Look, without God we wouldn't even exist so I think it's appropriate to honour Him during any festival, particularly a high-profile festival like this. I know there are some people that aren't Christian, but I think we can all agree that without God nothing would exist at all, so it can't hurt to honour Him and respect Him by cutting out a lot of the shenanigans that reflect poorly on our city and our people.
Give me a friggin' break. In the all out insane chance that someone in the Stampede organization thought that was a good idea then they should be fired immediately. We all know that the Flying Spaghetti Monster is what allows our existence.

I find the Stampede is worth about what I spend on it. I go on kids day and get in for free. It isn't worth paying an admission--that's a given. I do the breakfast, agri-complex, Super-dogs, see the rodeo(if I'm given free tickets), check out a couple of the comedians etc shows. If the kids want rides I take them to Calaway Park(far, far cheaper rides). I spend money on food. Doughnuts, salt water taffy etc.

Once is more than enough and for just a few hours. I'd rather go golfing but the kids like it.

As for being International. Nope. Wasn't in Africa when I lived there, nor New Orleans when I lived there nor China. Of course the people in New Orleans didn't even know where Montana was so maybe there should be a caveat included for them.

That's true to a degree, 4x4. At least with some Christian influence perhaps those atheists could be saved. Opening up a dialogue can't hurt, anyway. As for other religions, while I disagree with their stance (and God's word in the bible is fairly strong - nay irrefutable - evidence in my favour, lol) it would probably be appropriate to let them sponsor some off-site events.

I know our church always holds a huge stampede breakfast that many people from all walks of life and religious backgrounds attend. We are working very hard to bring this event into the grounds and I hope that 2009 will be the year. Maybe I'll even see some of you guys there!!

Anyway I can tell my opinion is derailing this thread...my apologies to the OP!

I'll bow out of the religious end of this discussion as I know a lot of people find it annoying.

Dess is right on the line with interesting ideology, or perfectly executed sarcasm. I can't tell if he's serious or not.

There was no religious end of the discussion. You just said something crazy, then followed it up with more craziness.

I'm no fan of the Stampede, but I do think it's a positive for the city, both in terms of perceptions of the city as well as civic spirit and pride. But even with it, we're a long long way from being a world-class city. It is a real uphill struggle for a landlocked, non-capital, relatively recently-formed city to become world class, and Calgary holds up pretty well against other cities in a similar situation (in fact, I'd say we could be the best 100-year-old, landlocked non-capital city in the world).

Their food festival is really fun but expensive with the tickets.

You are aware that this is a culture and way of life for many people?
Sorry, I've just totally hated the thing since I was 5. I thought it was a very ugly place and I never had fun there as a kid. Then my mom stuck me in tiny cowboy boots and sent me to school where everybody laughed at the little asian kid in his plastic hat and silly boots. There's nothing I remotely like about the Stampede other than carnival junk food. Sorry I can't be Curtis Glencross be an awesome chuck wagon racer on the side.

I hope you're opening yourself up for our resident Biblical scholar textcritic to smash your arguments.
