The 4th Amendment is from a time when people used guns for hunting, now republicans want to keep this ancient crap around.
The 2nd amendment, which most believe to encompass the right to bear arms, was mainly put in place to allow for the public to form militia for self defense and to have the ability to overthrow or defend against a government which had overstepped its bounds and become tyrannical.

The actual right to bear arms however is given by the presence of English common law, in which the right had been established many times over since the 1300's (I think). Although, this most certainly was the first codification of that premise in American (and maybe English Common Law).

I am not sure why this matters to the point you were making, but since this is the internet, I decided to say it rather than continue on with my homework!

On the actual topic of your post, I somewhat agree. I mean, if I am a gangbanger, even if I am thinking twice about doing a home invasion on a house that I know is armed to the teeth, I doubt it would change my mind about doing it. It would just mean that I am killing people a lot quicker if I think they might cause trouble, just out of self preservation.

Harper's coming to Vancouver to discuss new measures to get tough on gangs, guns, and drug crime.

Meanwhile his government continues to undercompensate and overwork its prosecutors, and reneg on agreements made with its police force. Hopefully the press twigs onto that and he has to answer some tough questions.

While no one here is going to have much sympathy for poor underpaid lawyers, those working for the federal Crown get paid considerably less than their provincial or private sector counterparts. Not only do they undercompensate federal prosecutors but they initiated a wage freeze in the midst of prolonged salary negotiations. It should be noted that federal prosecutors are responsible for drug prosecutions and, as a result, are involved in a lot of the gang files.

I bet all these gangs are shaking in their boots about Harper coming to BC.

If they aren't going to be tougher on these criminals by giving them life in jail for killing people why would they stop?

The gang leaders tell these young people that if they kill someone and get caught their families will be taken care of for the 3 months they will be in jail.

Exactly. Until there's meaningful punishments in place for gangs, there's almost no point in discussing "solving the problems". Everyone, including the gang members know the penalties are a joke and nothing will change until that does.

There's an interesting interview in the Vancouver Sun today with one of the founding - now reformed - members of the UN gang. Worth a read. Offers some insight into how kids get into gang life and what keeps them there.

Murders in 2008:

Calgary, population 1m: 32
Vancouver Metro, population, 2.2m: 58
Cuidad Juarez, population 1.1m: 1800

It's all a matter of perspective.

I always feel really safe in Vancouver. The probability of a regualr joe getting hurt by a gang is so low it's probably statistically irrelevant. Not that news like this isn't troubling, but the truth is it won't affect your life, either.

I would be way less scared of running into a gang member than running into a bear.
