My outlook is wondering how many people's minds (especially children) did this selfish SOB screw up by burning himself alive today? My guess is that's something they'll never forget.
Does that warrant punch-lines... probably not. But I think that's how some people deal with things like this.

Whenever I see the picture of Thich Quang Duc, all I think about is the mental damage he did to the kids that saw his self-immolation. What an a-hole.

Interesting choice of words.

I don't really worry to much when people do things to themselves, that's their own damn business.
I guess it could, 'tramautize' people in the area, I dunno. Kinda weak if you ask me.
Kids today have seen a lot of weird stuff on the net, they'd probably just think it was a good story for their friends.
No new info on why he did it?

I believe he was protesting KFC's removal of the 'extra tasty crispy' option from the menu.

The paper said he was doing it in protest of immigrations, but both the police and EMS refused to comment as to why.
It definitely backs up what CBC said yesterday:

So did he want more or less Somali murderers and pirates to be allowed in?

As somebody who has had to deal with gov't bureaucracy from time to time, I can say I have been frustrated many times. Add to that the fact that this person's very life could be at stake (I have known a few immigrants who have told me stories about being shot at as they fled their home countries), and a possible language barrier.... I could see how one might feel they were all out of options, and perhaps a protest would bring some attention to a system that they believe failed them.

Probably the most likely scenerio.
It's too bad he felt that he had to resort to self-inflicted violence, though, because it's probably only going to exacerbate things for him. Destructive behaviour isn't exactly something that's going to earn you any leniency with immigrations.

Yeah, but they probably cant ship him out until he's cleared from the hospital, so at the very least hes bought himself some time.
Not to mention, if I worked in immigrations my thought process would probably be something a little like this:
"Wow, this guy would rather set himself on fire than get deported. Hell, even I dont want to be in Canada that badly, the man can stay!"
Seriously, if someone came up to me with a gas can and a lighter and says: What would you rather have? Stay in Canada but I light you on fire or leave?
See ya.

From what I heard on the radio this morning, some quick actions by other pedestrians and EMS being right on the scene allowed the fire to be put out quickly. So I would guess that he chose to die, but good natured Canadians did as much as they could to try to help.

Both good points. Still though, I have to wonder why he'd of come up with a with such a painful, awful and surprisingly ineffective way of killing himself. Maybe he knew it would buy him some time like Locke said.
I take it back, fully. I feel really bad for this guy if he felt this was his only option.
Still, I question why he was denied refugee status or something, if the assumption is made it was a life or death situation for him back home.
