Oh really? That's funny. The system they used where I was, it was pretty straightforward, so unless your computer froze on you, you couldn't really screw up, because there was an answer for everything, a full script for people to use. Basically, it was a job lots of students did because their screening process wasn't exclusive, they basically just wanted warm bodies and it paid fairly well.
But I got lots of hang ups, lots of swearing, lots of wishing bad things on me, and I was there only for about two or three hours. Couldn't handle that much crap.

The worst job I had was during Stampede week when I was about 15 or 16. I was working for an African lady selling African art in the Big 4 or the Round Up, I don't remeber which. She didn't understand the concept of having a break or even taking lunch, and she expected me to be there when the gates opened until close, every single day. I would stand there and sell her crap without being able to rest, and even going to the bathroom made her give me dirty looks. She'd take breaks of course, but it wasn't okay for me.
I remember there was a concert on the Coca-Cola stage that I wanted to see, so I made up an excuse, saying my cousins were leaving and I was saying good bye to them...she told me if I wanted to say good bye to my cousins that I shouldn't bother coming back. So I went to the concert, and never went back.

EG's work stories are amusing me here for some reason
I don't know why people go out of their way to be a jerk though. When I get annoying people at the door or on the phone, I just tell them I'm busy at the moment or just heading out and thats that.

My mother has the best response. Ever since my father died she has left his name in the phone book. When people phone asking for Mr so and so she says he's dead. They apologise and then hang up not knowing what to say next.

My Grandma does the same thing. My Grandpa has been gone for 10 years and she still has her phone number in his name, and people still call looking for Mr. or Mrs. XXXX...she knows right away that it's a telemarketer when they're looking for Grandpa as well.

Please tell me this was back in the 70' or 80's? I am in my late 20's, and I never made less than $8.00 an hour.

As a rule i try to be polite to those who call. It's just that they take forever to say something. You pick up the phone and you hear the background noise with me going hello a few times. One some occassions they never speak - maybe they're nervous and all.

Wow. The lowest I was ever paid was 6.40 when I started working at BK, at the tender age of 16.

You should have threatened to go to the Workers Compensation Board with a complaint. Its illegal for an employer to not give you an hour lunch and two 15 minute breaks if you work more than eight hours.

Well, I am glad they are amusing to you. They were horrible for me.
I don't know why people are so horrible. I guess they just hear a voice that is asking them (sometimes) personal questions, they feel the need to graphically voice their displeasure.

That's crazy. The first place I worked was London Drugs and the minimum wage there was $8 an hour.

Did two stints of telemarketing - one selling home security systems, the other music lessons. Awful work but it was my first job so you take what you can get.
Also worked at the Calgary Zoo for a couple years - which wasn't bad unless you got stuck on clean-up duty at the cafeteria in the Atrium. 8 hours of cleaning up table after table, emptying garbage - all in a humid, boiling environment. Shifts when you were hung over were particularly long.

Ha, ha. I really like that response. Incredulous that you wouldn't be willing to hand over that information.
I never had to ask for credit info, but my first and only survey had to do with how people liked their bank services. The second people heard the word, 'bank,' they would get all defensive and paranoid, as though I were fishing for their banking info. Then the nastiness started. I hung up and walked out.

I do remember telling her that it wasn't allowed, the way she was treating me, but all she told me was that if I didn't like it, then leave. I wanted the money, and kept telling myself it's only for 10 days, but I think I left after 5. She was horrible.

I think I was making $5/hr at the Petro on Hwy 1 & 22 when I was 16 as a gas jockey. But that wasn't by far the worst. Had to be as a dish pig at a bar in Bragg Creek. Good god. I lasted 8 hours, I think.
