In the end, this thread is more about dissing Chad Kroeger and Nickleback more than anything.
Yeah someone *could* learn the guitar in that time but in the meantime, especially when they first start, all they'll be able to play is Smoke on the Water and even that'll sound like crap. Whereas with GH and RB, they'll get the feeling of actually playing a song (with a full band) instantly.

If I took all the time I've spent on CalgaryPuck, I probably could have learned to fly a helicopter by now. Doesn't make them interchangable.

/I've been playing guitar for ~12 years. The activities look the same, that's about it IMO.

True, but its not hard to learn the one chord shape you need for a power chord, and that's enough to get you started on a plethora of tunes, anything from the Ramones to Nirvana to a lot of current stuff.

And if you've ever listened to the neighbors playing Rock Band, it doesn't sound particularly good either, not most nights anyways .

I think the thing that bothers me about Rock Band isn't that its pretending to play guitar, all games involve pretend. It's the lack of depth to the game. You might as well touch type to the rhythm of music, its pretty much the same thing.

I think Kroeger would have done better to say, if you have a passion for music, enjoy listening and spending time with your music, and want to get even more involved in your pastime, Rock Band is not the best use of your money considering the other options available to you.

That's far too intelligent for Chad to come up with on the spot.

From my experience Guitar Hero introduced me to an incredible amount of new music that I would have not sought out on my own. It has also encouraged me to buy a guitar and I'm looking to get some lessons. I guess in my experience it has led me to be more interested in music than I have been in the past, which is completely opposite of what Chad is talking about. Even my girlfriend has picked up music again due to my interest.

Extending from my last point, I think he's just mad because kids are discovering new music and thus are buying CD's from 30 year old bands instead of picking up Silver Side Up part 7.

In any case, Rock Band is a good game for some quick, music based fun. Anything that can get me and my girlfriend playing together is a good thing.
