Just saw the announcements... LAME
Where's the cheap Macbook? The older one? Brutal Apple... brutal.
With a cheap portable Macbook option (sub $1000) they could gain an enormous amount of the market. But alas, Jobs is stuck in his reality distortion field and actually thinks Apple sells the elite high end products.

Can you hook up a Macbook to an external cinema display?

They do though. These things look and function on the same level as the Ipod/Iphone does compared to the rest of the market. They will always be geared to a slightly higher end consumer. I know I am paying more for this extra level of design refinement, and that's ok with me.
Btw, even though you do have a sub-$1000 laptop now, I don't even really see Apple being super cheap. They spend a lot more money/effort into these things than most companies, who tend to just throw out line after line of new products.

Another good thing to remember, is the market is going to be flooded (soon) with used Macbook Pros.
Mmmm...

Lol, one of the best reasons for a new MBP and it's hamstrung
I'd say I'm sure they'll fix it, but sometimes Apple just leaves things forever.

Just ordered a 2.4ghz Macbook with the solid state drive. This is going to become my new primary computer for home & work, replacing a ThinkPad X60 which is itself an excellent machine.
I've been waiting to make the switch to a Mac for work stuff for a while, and this new model fits the bill to a T. I needed 4 gigs of RAM so that I can run a VMWare virtual machine comfortably, the machine had to be a 13" because I'm on the go all day long, and I don't want to haul around a 15" laptop, and the aluminum enclosure gives it the stiffness and durability I want in something that is on the road as much as I am.
I'm pumped, can't wait till it arrives! I enjoy irony, so I cheaped out on the $13 express delivery charge, thus saving myself 0.5% of the purchase price.

Nice!
How much was the SSD, and do they say exactly the model they use? That's the only thing is I think they charge way too much for their SSD's, you could probably get a better much faster SSD aftermarket for less.
Otherwise I'm jealous.

There's lots of issues out there with the SSD aftermarket right now, mostly hiccups around the controllers that run them, so I opted to go with an Apple approved solution this time around.
I have no doubt the SSD will look archaic and slow in a year or two, that's the price of being an early adopter, but I consider part of my job to be an early adopter or I can't advise clients with any accuracy.
At the very least, the Macbook Air reviews put the SSD ahead on random read/write I/O, and behind on sequential, compared to conventional drives. I don't do a lot of heavy lifting on graphics files or video, so sequential performance is less important to me. Of course those are synthetic benchmarks, so who knows how it really performs. That's one of the reasons I specced one. The other is that if Apple feels its mature enough, I'm gonna trust them.

Makes sense, plus you can always upgrade the SSD in a few years if you need/want to.

Lol.. I'm so glad SSDs are finally coming into reasonable range.
And I love the small ones, part of me wants to buy like 20 32GB ones and one monster RAID controller and stripe em all.
One site I read did that with the super expensive ones, they had nine I think, and the performance was INSANE.

So Photon, when's your SSD porno coming out? haha.
...SSD's are sick. Still too much for me to consider though.
