Apparently what's left of Hanna is supposed to come up the east coast and merge with a storm from the great lakes. They were talking on the radio this morning that here in Halifax we'll likely see heavy rain and wind on Sunday.

Please, donate to the Red Cross, think about donating time to the Gulf Coast, and before you think that New Orleans is a waste of time, do a little research and see what exactly the N.O. metro area brings to the U.S. and North American economy. We would not be the same without it.

New Orleans has a lot of history and the importants in Oil that is about par or even better i guess with Texas City/Houston but lets face facts here. It is a city built under sea level in an era that could be hit with major hurricanes on a yearly basis. How many times can the city be rebuilt from the US tax payers before they say enough! CNN said if Gustav would have landed just 40 miles to the east the storm could have cost $30 billion more than it did because of what they figure what would have happened to New Orleans.
Sadly such a wonderful place may be the first major city to die in the coming years because of global climate changes and because they built 70% of the place under sea level.
I fear the worst!!

The rain was crazy here in Saint John. Many roads are still closed from heavy flooding. One thing i must say is that people are stupid as hell.. I had to come into the dealership to move some cars to high ground and the people in cars trying to drive throguh the water made me laugh..
guy in a small sports car.. hmm i think i can make it through 3 feet of water... dumb asses...
At one large lake there were like 10 cars stuck and broken down but people in cars just kept on going for it.. I mean really the 10 other cars that are stuck aren't a fataing clue.. come on people.

Not sure if this requires a new thread or not, but Ike is a Cat2 after passing over Cuba - now we go to the "dangerous currents in the Gulf" the same ones that were supposedly going to turn Gustav into a Cat5 - hahaha.

Mandatory evacuations for the Florida Keys aren't being taken too seriously by a lot of residents. Estimated business loss is 3 mill a day. Yikes. A few days ago the local media was saying Palm Bch County in line for a direct hit. At a few gas stations near here (just south of West Palm Bch.) there were fights that required police intervention. Right now it's gorgeous out.

Galveston is toast.
We got 9 inches of rain here in Wichita today. Complete insanity, and none of it is Ike related. If that thing doesn't take the right turn they are predicting once it comes ashore we could be in for catastrophic flooding here. It's supposed to rain all day tomorrow again, not Ike related.

Getting ugly in Texas tonight.
Even though there was a mandatory evacuation notice on Galveston Island, some stayed behind........and on CNN tonight they were saying some of those people were now calling for help, which is impossible now due to the storm and the fact it's dark out. Pretty sad, hope those people will be ok tonight, but I have my doubts.
That whole area could be an ugly sight by the time I wake up in the morning.

Per CNN: Emergency workers reportedly were driving through the Galveston neighborhoods with loudspeakers asking the people who did not evacuate to write their Social Security numbers on their arms for easier identification...

What are they still doing there? The federal government warning actually said that those who stayed behind faced "CERTAIN DEATH". That's how they wrote it.

I saw earlier today that Galveston police were telling the residents who stayed behind to write their social security numbers on their arms for identification if they are deceased tomorrow. That has to make you rethink your decision to stay.
Our news broadcasts have been dominated by the big train crash here so they haven't mentioned Ike for a while.

Galveston had ordered evacuation of the island, but LeBlanc said about 40 percent of the city's 57,523 residents chose to stay. "It's unfortunate that the warnings that we sent out were not heeded," he said.
LeBlanc said that by 9 p.m. all city personnel would be hunkered down and would not be able to respond to calls until after the storm passed.
Only a few more than 150 people were in a shelter of last resort, he said.

It is bizarre, isn't it? They were interviewing one guy on NPR today who claimed he wasn't leaving because he "didn't think the storm would be all that bad."
Moron. It's hard to feel sympathy for someone like that. On the other hand, some people are older, have trouble moving around--and one man would have had to abandon the remains of his recently-deceased wife, and refused to leave before burying her--and while I still don't agree with his decision to stay, I can understand it.
Either way, I hope everyone's okay in the end, but it doesn't look all that encouraging.

There was a phone interview with a man who said he had a crow bar and ax so he could cut a hole in his roof if he was trapped in his attic because of water. So, what about that scenario is better than evacuating?

He can make sure no one steals his generator that is under 15 feet of water?
