You end up like Big Mac if you do that.

And if you only model your songs after the popular ones, you are losing a percentage of listeners right off the top, the ones who like more than just the 2 or 3 most popular tracks. And as someone else mentioned, the radio stations only play the most popular ones anyhow. Who knows what might have happened with the other tracks if they had more exposure as well.
Then what does it matter if an artist knows or doesn't know what songs are going to be worth listening to? You made it sound like artists should be worried about which songs are going to sell best, now you turn around and say they need to be worried about who likes the other tracks. That just leads us back to where we are now... let people pick and choose which songs they want and everybody is happy.

my view on this. Charge what a CD is worth ($5-$10) and people will buy more cds and download music less because hey, its only a fiver right?

I almost always buy the full album on itunes. If i like one song enough that I am willing to buy it for a buck, chances are there are enough in the rest of the 15 or so songs on an album that the 8-10 extra bucks it costs that it is worth it. Only once in recent memory I have been let down, and that was with the purchase of the Flobots album

I love AC/DC, but let's be realistic here: they put out the same CD every couple of years. If any band was a poster child for single song downloads it'd be AC/DC.
Agreed, if you even listen to a lot of there older albums it feels like the same song playing over and over minus one or two tracks. Granted the hits they do put out are usually good songs but they definitely don't stray away from the centre line very often.
