Or just PM the night before. I'll still try to let you pick (for example if it's 3 or 4 pm we can wait for you to pick in the evening).

Yup 4 more spots left.

Here is a list of categories. I want to make them as black/white as possible to avoid having to make too many judgements. So things like guilty pleasures and so bad it's good are too subjective.

Also any Oscar winner in any category covers too many movies I think

Categories (subject to change)

1. pre-1960
2. 1960s
3. 1970s
4. 1980s
5. 1990s,
6. 2000s
7. Best Picture or Screenplay (Oscar or Golden Globe)
8. Action
9. Crime
10. Drama
11. Documentary
12. Thriller
13. Comedy
14. Musical
15. Romance
16. Sci-Fi
17. Sports
18. Animation
19. Foreign (any non-US movie)
20. Wildcard

We can finetune this list.

im not sure I can even think of 10 documentaries, let alone actually seen that many, gonna have to do some research or take one of the 5 or so ive seen early on

edit*** unless of course TV documentaries are counted...
but when I think "Movie" I think of something that wouldve needed to be seen in theaters

tv movies count (though i doubt any will be taken) but I can't think of a tv documentary myself...

theres a ton of tv documentaries, but they ususally tend to be part of a series and each one focuses on something different, but all tied together by a common theme

so for clarification: a single episode of a series (which in most cases would be one hour) would not be eligible, but the series as a whole would?

I'd like to suggest Digital Short (LaserCats people!), Best Adaptation of a Literary Work and an extra wildcard because I have a ton of pre-1960 films I'd like to draft.......

There could be a category for "Indie / alternative / small budget".

I think best picture should include the Cannes film festival Palme d'Or winners, as it's the most prestigious award anyway. I would also include the Berlin film festival Golden Bear winners (it's a really big thing internationally) and the Sundance Grand Jury winners. Personally I'd accept any major film festival winner.

I think "Best picture" would be much simpler than Picture / Screenplay.

Best Adaptation of Literary Work sounds like fun yes, but we could just make "Adaptation of previous work", so you can put adaptations of comic books, games or TV shows in here just as well. Covers a lot more.

Also of note: this is a Canadian site, but you'd count Canadian films as foreign? Not that it's any of my business, just kind of weird.

EDIT: If there's a category for SciFi, there should be another for Fantasy, as it's all the rage now anyway. (or you could make it SciFi / Fantasy.)
Historical wouldn't be bad either. Some place to put an extra western if nothing else

As a sidenote, I think the idea of black and white categorization is a pipedream. I suggest we simply request that no-one purposefully stretches the categories. If people feel like categorizing in non-standard ways that's fine, just don't do it just because you can't fit in all your favourites otherwise. Or we could accept IMDB categorizations.

"Horror" should also be included, either in "Thriller / Horror" or as it's own category. (Personally I think thriller is a little redundant, as most of it would fit under drama, crime or horror just as easily.)

Oh, and War should definitely be a category. And short film. (I don't see why should it be digital only?)

Hell, that was a whole bundle... I'll just put it in a complete list. I put the genres in alphabetical order.

1. pre-1960
2. 1960s
3. 1970s
4. 1980s
5. 1990s,
6. 2000s
7. Adaptation of Previous Work
8. Best Picture (Oscar, Golden Globe, Cannes Palme d'Or, Berlin Golden Bear or Sundance Grand Jury)
9. Documentary / non-fiction
10. "Foreign" (any non-US movie)
11. Short film
12. Action
13. Animation
14. Comedy
15. Crime
16. Drama
17. Fantasy
18. Historical
19. Musical

20. Romance
21. Sci-Fi
22. Sports
23. Thriller / Horror
24. War
25. Wildcard

You forgot the biggest film festival of them all, the Banff Film Festival.

I will add cannes, berlin and sundance

is literary work the same as adapted screenplay?
screenplay category can be both original or adapted.

yes canadian is foreign since the movie industry is in hollywood.

how do we determine what is indie/low budget?

and no 'shorts'' full length features only.

I would be tough for you without internet. This one will be going pretty quickly. It's difficult for me to track when people fall behind.

No problem. There's a 24 hour time-limit for picks.
I may shorten that for this draft but you should still be ok.
If you feel you can't make it, just send me your pick.

Worse case if you get passed-over (asskicked) then just make your pick in the next few hours. What I worry about the most is people who aren't on for days/weeks.

How about a category for "cult" movies, though I guess they could also be filed in already exsisting folders. Will leave to your discretion.
